Default Oil filters: 90915-20004 or 90915-YZZB9?

I have a 93 GS300 with an inline 6 engine. When i tried ordering 90915-20004 they advised against it, saying that it's bigger than 90915-YZZB9 and is only recommended for V8 engines.

Can someone please explain the difference between using a bigger vs. smaller oil filter on a 6-cylinder engine? Is there any advantage to using a bigger filter? Also, both filters are made in Japan, and if there is no harm in using a bigger one, which part number should i order?

Thanks in advance,

Ed

i'm positive 90915-20004 is made in japan but i'm not sure bout the ones beginning in yz.....

i've used the -20004's in my V6 before, no problem. theoretically, a bigger filter=more filtering capacity.
order the 20004 if you're comfortable w/ the price. i doubt you will see significant changes though. i didnt, but i still used it.

for reference, my '03 RX300 came from the factory with 90915-2003, obviously it is made in japan and this was stated on filter.

at first oil change I replaced it with, 90915-YZZB9, also made in japan. it stated on filter body that it (YZZB9) was compatible with 90915- 2003. Both were Denso.

There are 4 kinds of Denso filters (made in Japan) you can get for your Toyota/Lexus:

90915-20004: What comes factory-installed on V8 Lexus engines. Taller than 20003.

90915-20003: What comes factory-installed on 6-cylinder Lexus engines

90915-YZZB5: Cheaper version of 90915-20004. Some are adament in claiming they're the same without having actually examined the two filters. But see this ClubLexus thread to read gebo's dissection results of the two filters.

90915-YZZB9: Sounds like the 90915-YZZB9 is to the 90915-20003 as the 90915-YZZB5 is to the 90915-20004. Haven't seen this filter myself though.

The 20004 will provide the most filtering capability of the 4, and is the highest quality OEM filter you can get. Many Lexus owners with 6 cylinder engines opt for this filter.
