Default Power steering /alternator 91 ls400

I am almost positive that my problem is the power steering fluid leaking into the alternator.
I want to replace the alternator myself!
Do I need to fix the power steering fluid leak also.
I know it will eventually make the new alternator go bad, but how soon.

Can anyone give me any advice on getting out the old alternator and fixing the leak

Also does anyone have any advice on where to get replacement parts.

thanks
Jared

i would fix the leak also if not then replacing the alt is for nothing why dont you just rebrush it and clean up the rotor on the alt that would be cheaper than replacing it.its alot cheaper that way

I agree with sooner, get the alt rebuilt. Then have someone reseal the power steering pump. Lexus does sell a reseal kit, but you better have someone experienced do the reseal.

The "stuff" you have to remove to get at the alternator is the same stuff you need to remove to get at the power steering pump, but to answer your specific question, you might be able to go quite a while with a leaky pump.

Mine leaked for 4 years before I replaced it (I always carried extra fluid in the trunk). It eventually makes noise when you turn your steering wheel at low (or no) speed. Initially, topping it off quiets it down.

But after a few years, I had to replace it because it made the noise even when full of fluid- and not just when cold but all the time! It became a constant turbine-like sound that to an untrained ear was initially impressive- some passengers asked "what do you got under there, a supercharger"?

My alternator never failed, and in fact went untouched when I swapped out the pump. Still making the juice to this day (knock on wood).
