Hey guys,
Whenever I turn on AUTO on the air conditioning during the DAY, it always goes crazy thinking I want it to be 40 degrees in the car. The odd thing is, whenever I turn it on at nighttime, it works just fine and will adjust the temperature if I raise or lower the switch. Any ideas why this would be?
Thanks,
Silmeron

I understand exactly. Same way on my 2000 GS300. It really irritates me especially since it doesn't do it on my 98 LS400. I don't suspect you'll get any answers that will help you. I've asked this question twice and nobody seems to know. I guess it is something you have to live with. Or you could just set the auto temp to 80*. It's really embarassing when you have a friend riding in the passenger side and they keep fiddling with the temp control on their side until they finally say, "What's wrong with your temp guage? I thought this was a Lexus?"
Lexus uses a "sunlight" radiation sensor mounted at the bottom of the windshield at the front of the dash near the defrost airflow outlets, two, one on each side for later models. You can simply cover them up with something if the A/C is over-reacting to the level of heating from sunlight.

gebo,
I feel your pain, same here. You know, I bet it has to do with that sensor I was talking about in one of my other posts that used to have a little globe over the top of it. I bet once that broke during a car wash, it screwed up during the day.
I'll try wwest's suggestion. Thanks everyone!
