its an ok idea but the fact that our newer models take a bit more than 5 quarts kind sucks too...

I use this pan all the time and it's ok. After I finish I pour the oil back in a 5gallon jug.

General rule of thumb, always test containers for leaks before you put stuff in them that you don't want to spill. It is a heck of a lot easier to clean up water than a bunch of spilled motor oil.
