Default Time for a Timing Belt?

First time caller here , have a 1998 ES 300 with 35500 miles, original owner. Took it in to local Lexus dealer ship for 35000 mile service and mentioned for them to take a good look at belts & hoses. Well answer was exterior belts& hoses all fine, but they recommend Timing Belt should be replaced soon. Was told they not only go by mileage but also months, 96 months I belive I was told . Any comments welcome, Thank You Dave.

Did the dealer quote you $500 for the timing belt in the 2JZGE?
