Default Is all this really necessary to change belts?

Ok I have been reading the DIY on here for replacing your timing and Serpentine belts.....it seems pretty straight forward on here, but then I was looking at the ALLDATADIY and seemed like there is alot more to replacing these belts than I thought and read on here. Do you think it AllData is doing more than necessary?

Here are the 18 steps listed

1. Remove engine under cover.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Remove air cleaner duct.
4. Remove drive belt, fan, fluid coupling assembly and water pump pulley.
5. Remove radiator assembly as described under Cooling System.

6. Remove power steering pump pulley and front bracket as follows:

(a) Using the variable pin wrench Special Service Tool (SST) No. 09962-01000 with pins tool No. 09963-01000 installed, or equivalent, remove the nut and pulley.
(b) Remove the 3 bolts, plate washer and pump front bracket.

7. Remove No. 3 timing belt cover as follows:

(a) Remove the oil filler cap.
(b) Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 6 bolts and belt cover.

8. Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 3 bolts, belt cover and gasket, then remove No. 2 Timing belt cover.

9. Remove the 3 drive belt tensioner bolts, then the tensioner

10. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression as follows:

(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover.

NOTE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.

(b) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys are aligned with the timing marks of the No. 4 timing belt cover.
(c) If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°).

11. Remove timing belt from camshaft timing pulleys as follows:

NOTE: If re-using timing belt, place matchmarks on the timing belt and camshaft timing pulleys as shown in the illustration

(a) Alternately loosen then remove the 2 tensioner bolts, then the tensioner and dust boot.
(b) Remove the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulleys.

12.Using variable pin wrench to hold the pulley, remove the camshaft pulley bolts, then pulleys

13. Remove crankshaft pulley as follows:

(a) Using crankshaft holding tool (SST) No. 09213-70010 with companion flange holding tool (SST) No. 09330-00021, or equivalents, loosen the pulley bolt.
(b) Remove the holding tools, then the pulley bolt.

(c) Using suitable puller set remove the crankshaft pulley.

14. Remove the 5 No. 1 timing belt cover bolts, then the timing belt cover and gasket.
15. Remove timing belt guide.

16. Remove timing belt. NOTE:

o When re-using timing belt, draw an arrow on the timing belt in the direction of engine revolution.
o Place matchmarks on the timing belt and crankshaft timing pulley as shown in the illustration.

17. Remove idler pulley. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the pivot bolt, plate washer and idler pulley.

18. Remove crankshaft timing pulley.

(a) Remove the bolt and timing belt plate.
(b) Remove the crankshaft timing pulley.
NOTE: If the pulley cannot be removed by hand, use One of the SSTs to remove the crankshaft timing pulley.

* SST 09950 - 50010 (09951 - 05010, 09952 - 05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05010)

CAUTION: Do not scratch the sensor part the crankshaft timing pulley.

Thats how you do it. The only difference is you will more than likely not have the SST's (special service tools). You don't need them though, they just make it a bit more convenient.

I am doing mine on the weekend of the 28th

sounds right to me.

according you your sig... you have a 2jzgte supra? sc300? is it a 2jzgte or a na-t setup?

when i did the timing belt on my sc300 there was no need to remove the power steering pump. 2jzgte might be a bit different though.

good luck. it not a tough job at all. just make sure you are careful that is all.
