Default Trying answer on this forum!

Gents and Ladies:

My father owns a first gen LS400 - actually a first year. It has about 180K on it...fairly reliable except for some problems with the alternator and other electrical items.

Anyway, I drove it while I was waiting to buy my car for a couple of weeks and his drivers seat, when pulling the backrest up, would only move one side up.

That is, when you adjust the seat back down, the right side of the seat goes down, while the left side stays put. When you adjust it up, the left side stays put again.

I want to pull the seat out. So here are my questions:

1) What are some things that I should be weary of when removing the seat? Disconnect the batter (probably not), disconnect wiring harness (location would help)
2) Has anyone ever pulled the seats off?
3) How much for a new seat?
4) Can the backrest and the buttrest be disconnected from each other?
5) Is there a way, without destroying the leather, that I can get inside the seat to see if the mechanical pieces are intact - I presume that the steel mechanics in the backrest are broken or sticking.

As for the Water Pump, how often should it be replaced? Does it have a plastic or metallic impeller? Should the pump be replaced at the same time as the timing belt (it's not a chain is it?)

TIA

Since no one answer your questions. I'll try
1. To be safe, disconnect the battery. My 93 SC400 manual always read disconnect the battery at least 10 min. before working on the car.

2. No not yet

3. Why spend that kind of money? try junk yard. www.junkyarddog.com

4. I think so, have to read up my manual about this.

5. Same as no. 4, May be you should buy a LS400 repair manual if you're planning to keep the car.

recommend changing the water pump at the same time as the timing chain. It all related to labor charge on changing the pump.
