ooops, I almost forgot. I guess it take a "specialist" to change the wiper blade inserts too! Where do I sign up for the Lexus coursework so I can overcharge myself for doing work on my car?

The technical service information (TSI) for "wiper insert replacement method" is BO95-004.

Thats not true all the time. Not even close.

I had my timing belt and water pump etc etc done at 60K miles and spent a grand total of 750-800 on parts labor. Paying $2,000 in maintainance for anything less than a new engine/trans installed is ludicrous.

The Lexus dealers in Atlantal area charge about $1,500.00 for a completed 90K service which included change all the fluid, rotate+balance, spark plugs, clean throttle body, water pump, timing belt, drive belts, crankshaft seal and cam seals( on most model).
You may need to get the detail service and ask them what is included and what not.

and besides doing a timing belt pays in my dealership 3.6 hours at 95 for the belt = 450

and before u go off rambling again do some research
Yeah, i'm still not seeing a $2,000 price tag there. I called Lexus for an oil change yesterday... $50.00... i said.. "what else do i get for $50.00?".. they said "nothing".. I then called Toyota... $24.95 and they did an inspection and washed my car! If you work for the dealer.. no one is giving you crap.. they're just blaming the people that own the dealership that they are charging too much... 'cause they are. Lexus and Toyota in my area quoted me $875-900 for the 90k service (including timing belt) plus $250 for the water pump and they listed everything you have listed above plus some other "check this, check that" stuff. The Lexus dealership in the state I bought the car from also quoted me the amount listed above.

BTW: I'm not sure why any of the dealerships would deviate from Lexus' recommended 90k service, unless they are adding on "extras" to jack the price up a bit, kinda like they do on the retail of their high demand cars ($400 pin stripes = money well spent! ).

The 2,000 dollar price tag is simple. 1: people WILL pay it, if they are uneducated about car maintainance. And 2: There is a profit to be had .... but NOT off me.

Suggestions and Thoughts, greatly welcomed.

Find a local mechanic to do the work. A perfectly private mechanic is just as skilled or better than a stealership mechanic. Also stealership mechanic get paid by the hr so they wouldn't put as much effort into your car unless its a brand new or current model of a vehicle cover by warranty. Since your engine is the same as a NA supra you may want to check shops that deal with them as well.

I know my local shop (First State Motorsports in Claymont, DE) provides service on or above-dealership level quality and service for far less than half of what they would charge My advice is to shop around, I wouldn't have paid more than 700 for a timing belt/pump replacement.

My mechanic said he would the the entire 90k service for $900. Seems like a decent price to me.

That still seems awfully high. You should pick and choose what you want done and do some of the simple stuff by yourself.

Default Update

Just wanted to give everyone an update - I got the 90K work done, which includes T-belt and Water pump for $835 @ Dynamic Auto (Ted) - In Southern California.

The job was done first rate, and I would highly recommend.

Thanks to ALL the SC forum members for the referral. I was about to drop $2,200 @ my local Lex Dealer.

Now I'm relocating to No Cal this month.

Finally a timing belt thread I don't have to read too intently.

Those of you with 2006 models equipped with the 2GR-FE motor can rest easy knowing your engine has a "chain" and not a belt.

This is the engine fitted in the 2006 Avalon. Not sure what all models of Lexus have it, but there are some.

Chains can stretch too. But yea, Id rather have a chain.

DIY, Buy a manual get the tools you need and take your time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just did the following on my Jeep at 120k about a month ago:

Water Pump, replaced with flowcooler WP
Exhaust Manifold (was cracked) replaced with Headers (cheaper then the oem replacement)
Timing Chain (Performance Double timing chain and sprokets, 200k life)
Engine oil flush, oil & filter
Tranny flush, fluid & filter
Differential flush, fluid
Coolant flush, coolant
Removed belt driven fan installed Electric Fan
Thermostat 180 deg
Replaced radiator with all aluminum dual core (old one was in pretty bad shape)
Replaced transmission cooler
Engine mounts (right side was toasted because of craked exhaust manifold)
Front drag link ends and tie rod ends
Shock bushings
Port & polish head, (intake & exhaust)
Totally cleaned intake manifold, throttle body and injectors
Spark plugs, wires distributor cap & rotor

IMO when you need to do something like timing chain, you may as well hit everything else
you can think of.

Steak & beer for a couple of brokanic friends, 12 hours, done. Well I started about
removing stuff at 5 in the morning, friends showed at 8, worked till 8 with lunch and beer
taking out a couple hrs. No check engine light, but the radiator hose popped off cuz i forgot
to tighten it! lol Oh yea I only have 1 year of auto class in Highschool about 10 yrs ago.

I think the biggest thing was scheduling so I had both friends working on something
the whole time, nobody sitting on their *** waiting.

Not sure on total but I think it all came out around $2200. And a couple IOU favors
