I posted this question on the LX 470 site, and have a lot of people who agree with my concern, but so far no advice on how to fix it....so here is the question. Any one here have any suggestions? Thanks for your time.
I have a 99 lx470 and my low beam lights are terrible (IMO) They do not seem bright enough as I can only see about 5 feet ahead of me in the dark. They seemed to be pointing too low and I asked the dealer at the last check up to bring them up for me. I was told the tech said the lights were within the range of where they are supposed to be. But I am constantly flicking my lights from high to low for oncomming traffic. Does anyone have any suggestions (that won't kill me in cost) on how to get my lights brighter when in low beam? Or...if I have to go the expensive route, what do I do and how much does it cost? This is very bothersome to me. Thank you for your time
Since the tech at your dealer says they're within the normal range, I have a few thoughts:
- Try another dealer, or even a gasoline service station that does State inspections. They should be readily able to check the headlight light intensity and aiming. One of you seems to be mistaken, either your dealer or you.
- It's possible that the bulbs have aged and their light output has gone down. I'd only consider replacement bulbs that have the same wattage and are "street legal" in their light output. These bulbs are readily available and even the expensive ones shouldn't cost more than $80 total.
- You could line up another car with yours at night and compare things visually yourself, with the engines running in both. That should give you an idea of both aiming and intensity.
- Have you cleaned the front windshield on the inside recently?
Many of us with SC's have changed the stock 9006 bulbs to the slightly brighter 9005 bulbs. If your car takes the same sort of bulb it is worth a shot. You can read up on the details if you search.
Silvania Silverstar bulbs are the best.... assuming your aiming is all correct, and there are no electrical or physical problems, such as foggy headlight casings, ect. I picked up a pair of Silverstar bulbs off ebay for about 20-25 bucks. They are supposedly the brightest, but still legal bulb available.
Seems like the general consensus on the LX 470 site is most feel the same way about the low beam intensity (or lack thereof). Apparently I am not the only one that feels they are terrible. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I will ask the dealer about the Silverstars.
Thanks again.
