i was recently driving on the freeway and my engine stopped 3 times. my buddy at the lexus dealer checked it out and he said that my intake's o2 sensor was reading very bad. he said that is was caused by my KnN intake. he said that the oil used in those filters will eventually get into the intake o2 sensor and ruin it. if anyone uses an intake that uses oil then i advise you to get the intake o2 sensor checked out. a new one cost i think around 200 so it would be a shame to waste money on a new one.
If anything, it will take out your MAF sensor, which you can see just after your airbox. I have had that problem and merely took some brake dust cleaner, sprayed the sensor, wiped it gently, put it back in and it worked fine.
Some advice?
I washed off all the oil on the filter. Then I reapplied the oil only to the side facing the actual air flow. I have found no buildup on the the MAF sensor.
My 'local' Lexus dealer up in San Antonio also told me the K&N will do the above. I bought a separate Toyota OEM filter to use on trips up and into the U.S. However, using that K&N has saved me mucho on gas. We pay $2.30 U.S. equivalent a gallon for regular (Magna) (can't use it because it will eventually blow the catalytic converter due to its high sulfur content) and $2.80 for Premium (which is largely refined in the U.S. The Toyota OEM filter just chokes my car at the high altitude.
When my MAF went on the fritz the first time, the engine heated up and melted part of the paint of the engine cover enough that I had to paint over it.
If you just clean it off, there is a red diode on it, then put it back in. You should be okay.
