Sooner & damon,

Since you guys have both done this replacement without dropping the trans could you maybe explain the procedure in more depth? I'm trying to put together a tutorial on this and could use your insights.

Mainly, what is the exact method you used to get to the middle 12mm bolt? Socket extensions? If so, what combo? Did you get your arm up there or something like that? It looks like there isn't even room for a socket with a swivel adapter. I know you go from the bottom but that's about it. Did the bolts need any liquid wrench or wd-40 to loosen? Also, putting the middle bolt back on with that bracket, how'd you do that?

The only info in the RM I could find on this was on EM-80 where it says 13ft-lb torque on the bolts/nuts. It also says something like don't touch the pipe or gaskets with your hands...huh?!

Here are some pics which may help describe things. Any additional info would be great, thanks!

It looks like this thread is a little dead, but I'm pretty sure I need to do this for both my 91 and 94. I've been searching and this is so far the best set of instructions. We need a video or some pictures of doing the job. I know I'D sure find them helpful.

Since it is now 2018, things like bore cameras are easily accessible, so guiding a ratchet to some blind spot may be much easier now. I'll see what I can do.

Default 1994 LS 400 EGR pipe starter water bridges intakes.

Its now 2019. Working on a 1994 Lexus Ls 400. One of the top five cars of all time so its worth doing the repair DIY. Completely insane to pay the dealer etc $5000. for the same work. Replacing virtually all gaskets and hoses on the top end entake to water gagskets. Also replacing timing belt power steering pump and hoses all pulleys all sensors. Will post photos etc. Biggest issue a real show stopper is the EGR LOWER REAR FLANGE 12mm BOLT. Virtually imposssible to remove without at least removing the catalytic converter . Requires air tools and a lot of hassle to even get a clean shot at the bolt with a wrench.. Updates to follow.

lA visit to harbor freight for a very special multi angle ratchet $20. Using air tools Separated both catalytic converters from exhaust pipes and dropped center exhaust mount 4 bolts. Leaving the cats bolted to exhaust manifold. The special rachet reached the EGR Pipe rear flange bolt perfectly.

Harbor Freight has many "special multi angle" ratchets. Can we have exact name/cat number or picture preferably?
My last mechanic who was supposed to diagnose my smog test, managed to screw up something and now the car engine sounds bad. It runs fine, but I'm concerned that he broke the egr pipe (don't see anything disconnected around cats or exhaust). Since my motto is - never allow those who screwed up something to fix it (because if they knew how to, they wouldn't screw it up in the first place), I intend to check things myself and if need be, replace the EGR pipe. Every time I step on the gas pedal, the engine sounds louder than before, and very deep exhaust note can be heard inside the cabin.
