Default 285/60R20 yes, another tire thread

So without staring another oh-so edifying discussion of ABS...

I am sold on the Michelin Defender LTX.

I want LT tires - I'll likely hook up a travel trailer, etc.

I am going to use 20" rims.

My only options in the LT is a 265/60 or a 285/60.

Here's the specs on the 286/60 per tire rack (Im sure you can figure out the columns):LT285/60R20
125/122R
3,640 lbs. 80 psi. 13.5/32". 54 lbs. 8-10". 8.5". 11.5". 9.1". 33.4". 622

After a fair amount of searching, I cannot find a definite answer on if these 285/60s will surely rub. I am finding numbers of anywhere from 33.4" to 33.9". From everything I've seen, 33" is no problem... will another 1/2" be the last straw?

Anybody?

I installed 275/60R20 and the front tire is a hair away from rubbing the mud guard. If you don't mind trimming or taking a heat gun to the mud guard it would probably fit but I can't guarantee it. You can get the Defender in 275/60R20 in a P style but with a load rating greater than the max axle rating, which I'd be comfortable using for towing.

They will definitely rub, but should be easy to alter or remove the mud flaps. I have the Defenders in 275/60/20 and in rare situations, half turning on an incline while braking, I do rub the mud flaps just slightly.

I’d ask this question over at www.ih8mud.com. Every tire combination you can think of has been tried over there.
Personally if I were towing I wouldn’t want to run a 34” tire for gas mileage issues.
I run a 275/55/20 and have no issues with clearance. Running BFG K02 and they are LT

i run BFG KO2's LT 285/55/20's you get about 1" wider tread then the "275" which would give you more rubber on the road. They are 56 lbs and cost about $75 more per tire then the "275" series. Plus the KO2's are "D" rated, which is all you need. "E" rated tire's maybe to much. But I agree search "Mud" a lot of threads on tire's.

I would also consider 275/65/20, some on mud are running that size. @Mcgaskins is running it with no trimming on stock bumpers as is @ranma21 (with bumpers) in KO2s. The Defender is available in this size.

After some discussion and consideration I’m going to go with the LT285/60/20 and .75” spacers. I’m agreeable to the slightly wider stance, and the best part is my local Lexus dealer already confirmed they will mount, balance and install, with the spacers, and then do the alignment. With them supplying the tires and installing the spacers, I’m feeling confident I won’t get any pushback from then regarding warranty issues.

Ive got a set of the 2015 20s being PVC’d in Onyx Chrome (a proprietary color they introduced at SEMA) and they should be ready next week. I went to the warehouse last week and the color is amazing.
