Just figured out the maps are circa 2008. Service is up to date GPS is not!!!
If I buy the latest updates are those self install or do I need Lexus to install them?
Thanks,
There "may" be a way around it but, yes, the dealer is wanting to pry more money out of your wallet. You have to choose if it is really worth it. A friend of mine had his updated and he said he saw little difference. Guess it depends on where you drive and how many new roads you encounter.
Yea they need a laptop hooked up or similar and enter a key... they charged me 249 for the whole thing...it was that or my wife complaining about how an address is missing and shes lost..lol we need google maps in the car
Anyone can obtain a Lexus Nav update USB drive. Just insert the drive into the slot and the Update will begin. I think Sewell Lexus sells the update for $189.

the usb drive is just the key, not the map data. map data is not sold publicly and that's why it's a complicated process.
putting the usb drive won't do anything. not to mention 08-09 don't even have a usb slot
I know the GPS is HDD driven. There is NO USB to plug anything into. For the 169.00 what am I getting. Several Discs?
It's a 2009 now. In 2010 they changed the radio head design. In hind site I should have bought a 2010 or newer.
Not a day goes by that I regret not buying a newer version. The Bluetooth is crappy, nothing sincs as I have an iphone. Looks like the Android OS does? Not even the Blackberry?
For something so expensive the technology is so far out of date, the gremlins are not even laughing!
It only takes a year or two for technology to fall behind. I was shocked at how much they had imporved the telematics in my 2013. Everything is faster and syncs without flaw. But I already understand that the newer models do even more. It is just the way things go.
Greg, I've seen the 2013 in action. I can't believe how day and night it is compared to the 2009's.
My brother is an avid Toyota buyer and has the entune set up in his vehicle. The only catch is to all of that is we don't have unlimited data anymore. Which brings me to the point of the entire technology racket being so far behind by the time the vehicle goes to market.
The other thing that really bothers me is the iPhone not working to it's full potential. It works great in my Infiniti, but not in the Lexus? I understand that the Android OS devices work great.
Getting back to the GPS updates. I've still not gotten to the root of the update being a self install. I'm currently working off circa 2008 software.

No, the carriers are getting tight with the bandwidth. I am lucky on my iPhone as I am still grandfathered in for the limited unlimited and seldom go over 2gb in a month. BUT, my iPad that I need in the filed can suck up large amounts of data.
Not real sure what you can do about the iPhone, it would be nice if Lexus offered a OS update to fix this but Lexus is not one to do this.
Wish I could help you with the GPS updates but have no idea.
