My 2013 LX570 Stolen/Carjacked

When I bought my 2013 LX, I really did not think that the car was in demand by thieves. I did not get LoJack and relied on Lexus telematics.

My car was stolen/carjacked during detailing, at a shop that i have been using for the past 10 years specializing in detailing high end luxury cars. overall the theft was ery professional job. I reviewed the video from the security camera, took all of 15 seconds and they were gone.

Now I have the inconvenience of leasing a new car, talking with the police and insurance company and the state drug enforcement agency. The most painful experience will be getting a replacement handicap placard. I will need a notarized letter stating I lost the placard.

The dealership was very accommodating finding and delivering a replacement vehicle identically equipped except except in Black exterior/black interior which I wanted, but could not get in December.

Now I need LoJack installed, to minimize any repeat. I am very fortunate that I am not hurt.

I picked up my new truck this evening, pictures to follow.

Wait, what exactly happened?

It was stolen while you yourself were detailing the car, or a shop?

If thieves want your car, they'll take it, no matter what deterrence you have

It happened at a very reputable local shop that I have been using for the past 10 years without incident.

Sorry to hear about your LX being stolen, what a pain to have to deal with! Just curious, how did they get into the vehicle? Did they get the key from your detailer? I was under the impression the built in security in these vehicles would require a bit more time than 30 seconds to break into and drive away, unless you had the key.

imherenow 02-19-13 07:32 AM

damn mann that sucks..i just hope the detailing folks were not involved in this. What is LoJack

Quadro 02-19-13 12:45 PM

Please share more details...

1. Did the detailers left the car unlocked?
2. If so did they leave keys in the car? (hope not)
3. Did you leave ownership documents in the car?
4. I understand you live in NJ? Living in a port city increases the risk since these cars get put into containers and ship into middle east.

I was informed by the police that there were a gang of car thieves and about 18 cars stolen in a ten mile radius concentrating on car detail/car wash, restaurants and other areas where they perform valet parking.

Yes, the car is unlocked, the key fob is usually in the car and during the detail process on top of the windshield, and my leased registration and insurance card was in the vehicle (last required by law). The process is usually the same regardless whether the detailing is done at the dealership or in the shop.

My educated guess is that the car is either in pieces or in a container in the Atlantic. 15 minutes after the incident Lexus used the telemetrics to track, but there was no signal indicating either it was jammed or the car was off and the battery removed.

I think that the key fob was in the car as the detailing staff was just hand washing or lining the truck up for the wash.

LoJack is a theft preventive system, always on, and the police are the only ones that activate the tracking.

i like the black one better than silver, how long the insurance take to complete the whole thing till you get the new truck? just curious:p

dochusar 02-19-13 11:11 PM

I took delivery of the new truck, as the pictures show. Negotiated with the dealer. The claim will be settled after 29 days if the truck is never found or earlier if they find the truck.

It's the detailers insurance that is paying right?

Man, what a story! Like a scene from Gone in 60 Seconds.

Glad you got it taken care of so quickly,

NickawdIs 02-20-13 06:06 PM

That sound fishey

SW17LS 02-20-13 06:11 PM

I would say the shop was in on it if he hadn't used them for so long...

New Jersey is a "no fault" state, my insurance will pay my claim, minus my deductible, and then go after the detailer's insurance. I will get the deductible if my insurance company collects from the detailer's company.

tjmhillz 02-20-13 07:40 PM

Damn thats crazy to hear. what shop was this at?

LexusChris 02-20-13 11:51 PM

Damn, I didn't even know thieves targeted the LX 570. I just saw one earlier 2013, with the HIDs what a beauty.

SW17LS 02-21-13 07:36 AM

They'll target anything with value basically, especially if the keys are just in it.

SupraLX570 02-21-13 08:41 AM

Wow sorry to hear about the loss. I just picked up my second lx, 2013 model and after reading your story im glad i got lo jack early warning.
Is the detailing shop in north jersey??

ggebhardt 02-21-13 12:02 PM

It seems to me if they left the keys on the dash, they were asking for it!

Walter, great decision to get the LoJack this time. Did you buy yet? I work for LoJack and may be able to get you a deal especially if you want to add on Early Warning. Thanks.

Email jaleman (a) lojack.com or send me a PM.

^^^^THIS^^^^
High end vehicles are is great demand over seas and they are retitled and sold at still a great price in other countries. I have seen images of the inside of shipping containers with everything from Porshe, Lexus and Maseratti. This is a huge business.

Wow who would of thunk something like that would ever happen in New Jersey? :egads:

I doubt it, a brand new high end Lexus SUV, I bet it is on a container heading to Africa or Russia.

dochusar 02-22-13 05:58 PM

Overall, thanks for your comments. I have the aggravation of replacing my personal property in the car. I am very fortunate that I have a very accommodating dealer, it really one of the reasons that I love to stay and deal with one dealership. I guess they consider me a good customer.

Lexus has replaced two vehicles for me although neither was for theft. In both cases, there were defects or damages and in one case vandalism while at the dealership. We refused to accept the return of our vehicles and after some negotiation with the dealership they were replaced.

Hypothetical question ... what difference would it have made if your vehicle had been stolen while it was at the Lexus dealership rather than at a detailing shop? It sounds like your dealership is indeed very accommodating, but would they have done more if it happened on their property? That was a factor in both of our replacements, especially the vandalism incident.
Regards,

SaniDel

P.S. It would be interesting to know which insurance company paid for the replacement ... the dealership's, the detailer's ... or yours!

In New Jersey, a no fault state, I will be paid by my insurance company minus my deductible. If my insurance company gets paid from the detailer's insurance company, then I will get back my deductible.

At the present time, it looks my car, business and homeowners insurance companies are all gathering to go after the detailer's insurance company. Lexus financial will likely also go after them as well due to the gap coverage provision.

As they should! From what you have told us, the detailer is at least negligent and may also be culpable. Thanks for telling us the "happy ending" to what started like a very sad story. Enjoy your new LX ... especially as it is the color you wanted!

That's a frightening story. I drove my wife's LX to work in Philadelphia this morning. While waiting to make a left turn, I noticed someone driving slowly and intently checking out my car. I don't usually pay attention to that kind of thing, but this time it gave me an uncomfortable feeling. I just noticed this thread from last week. I’ll definitely mention it to her.

Our LX is white with tan interior. It looks sharp, but I think I prefer the black like yours. It’s nice you were able to get a new one without too much trouble.
