Default Frame and Tow Questions?

Hey all,

Just wondering...where is the LX frame derived from?? Is it a fully-boxed version of Toyota Tundra frame?? The new Sequoia is a "strengthened" version of the Tundra frame...it is fully-boxed, unlike Tundra. So, is the LX/Land Cruiser frame the same (or derived from same platform) as Sequoia/Tundra?? As you may know, the previous LX470 frame was it's own platform, unique to it and it alone. Is the new one unique??

On a related question, why is it that the Land Cruiser and LX tow LESS than Sequoia by a significant amount?? The powertrain is the same. This is strange becase the Sequoia has an independent suspension in the rear, which is less tough than the solid axle in the Land Cruiser.

Thanks in advance.

The LX570 frame is derived from the 200 series Land Cruiser.

LC = LX

The 200 series has the same wheelbase as the 100 series and is supposed to be stronger than the Tundra frame. I assume it is using the same high tensil steel as the Tundra. I do know that the LX570/LC has the same rear axle ratio as the 1st gen (00-04) Tundra which would explaint the lower tow capacity. Overseas the capacity is 7700lbs for the LC in both 4.7 and 4.5 diesel trim.

lexusrott...yes, i know that LX and LC are the same. Read my post again...you did not answer my question. I am fully aware that the LX frame is the same as TLC200...this is why i wrote "LX/Land Cruiser" in my original post. So, again, where is the Land Cruiser frame derived from??

pagemaster...The Sequoia frame is a stronger version of the Tundra too.

The only weird thing is that the LC tows much less than Sequoia. Can rear axle ratio be the only difference??

Rear axle like the 9.5" one from the Tundra 4.7

Overseas Landcrusiers max out at around 7700lbs and that is for both the 4.7 5speed and 4.5 D with the Tudnra/200 series 6 speed. Toyota just added VVTi to the overseas 4.7 for the Australian and South African markets.

Can rear axle ratio be the only difference??
The 200 series are also full time 4 wheel drive which takes away from some of the tow capacity.

The rear axle is 9.5" from Tundra, but the Sequoia also has independent rear suspension, which is theoretically weaker than solid axle. I wonder what is the rear diff size of the Sequoia. BTW, the Sequoia can tow 9100 lbs.

The Sequoia ALSO has full-time 4wd. It's 4wd system is like the 4runner V6 4wd system. It is called Multi-mode 4wd. You can run it in 2wd mode. But, it can also run in 4wd mode all day long over any surface and is full-time mode, just like the Land Cruiser. So, i doubt that this makes any difference.

What is also strange is that the Sequoia actually weighs MORE than Land Cruiser by 400 lbs and still tow 600 lbs more. It weighs about 100 lbs more than LX570 too. Usually, if you weigh more, then you tow less if everything else being equal.

I have a feeling that the Sequoia's frame is just a slightly bigger version of the Land Cruiser/LX frame. Same platform. In the past, the LX470 had it's own frame, while the Sequoia's frame was just a bigger version of the 4runner's frame. This was why the previous Land Cruiser/LX470 weighs more than previous Sequoia despite being smaller...the LX470 frame was more heavily constructed. I guess that for cost reasons, the new frame is the basis for all the big SUVs from Toyota...which in turn is derived from a strengthened version of the Tundra.
