Perfectly maintained, 167k mi, trade or keep?
Hey guys! I always like to talk things through with fellow folks who understand...and are educated as to the quality of these trucks.
I'm at a decision point. I am deciding, after I just learned my 06 LX is needing the rear shocks and front shocks replaced for $2500 or so, if it's time to keep her or upgrade. As some history, ours is in showroom condition, pearl and tan and just looks like new. Has 167k miles on it, so it's still worth quite a bit $18k-ish. We were a little disappointed that last year the steering ECM went out and it was a little over $4,000 to replace. Also has new tires and brake pads as of last week. Maybe I am answering this as I type, but I do assume I will take a drop once we get to 200k, but I also realize I could do a lot of little repairs versus buying a newer one for $45-50k...which could have piddly repairs as well. This one has been fully dealer serviced since brand new with 6 miles.
What do you say? Keep it and love it or trade while the value is still up?
Thanks as always!

You’re kind of doing an apples to oranges cost comparison. Maintenance and repairs I consider to be different. I’d only be disappointed in the 4K. Maintenance costs apply to every vehicle. If it still fits your needs, I’d run it until reliability or safety becomes an issue. Your gen seems to sell just fine regardless of mileage, particularly if well maintained.

You're looking at 2 choices, each around the same price...either drop the money on Lexus shocks, or replace the AHC system with a Land Cruiser-esq. suspension.
I tend to go with the 50% rule where repairs on an old vehicle are ok if they're at or below half the for-sale value of the vehicle; above 50%, sell the vehicle and buy another. This is from Dave Ramsey, and normally applies to the usual beaters and not so much a series 100. Well maintained series 100 trucks typically do not die after dribs and drabs of >$2000 repairs.
How often was the AHC fluid changed?

Without knowing the MY, how can you write "it's drastically cheaper"? It may be, if you're talking used torsion bars and shocks and springs. A lot also depends on who does the work, and where.

The 06LX is a really nice model. I have thought about what I would do when our AHC finally needs replacing and have essentially decided it is a very nice feature for traveling, loading, unloading, and for adjusting for different roads. Also, my wife likes to put the AVS on Comfort setting and I tend to lean toward Sport. Since we still drive ours regularly, the AHC is a desirable feature and would be considered a maintenance cost. Although we loved our LC, the LX has been more pleasing.
