I have purchased a used LX key with remote and intend to cut and program it for my LX so it can be used as a back up key. While the cutting is simple and any lock smith can do it for me, I would like to know about the programming.

How can I program the used key for my LX?

Does the old LX information need to be erased before it can be programmed for my LX? or does it automatically erase when the new LX is programmed?

Can anyone provide step-by-step instructions?

As I only have one existing key, I am keen to use program the other key asap to avoid any unforeseen problems.

Call the Lexus dealership and talk to someone in the parts dept. I just called them recently myself, and the only way to get a Lexus key that is fully programmed to remotely lock/unlock the doors and to set the alarm system is through the dealership for ~ $200 plus ~ $65 for the tech to program it. There are online sources for the programmable keys as well, but then you still need to program it. If not done correctly, it will disable your ignition system.
My local locksmith can make a duplicate key, but he says his will only unlock the doors manually(which is better than nothing) for about $85. He said even in his key, there is a 'chip' that enables the fuel pump to turn on so the vehicle will run; another security feature.
