getjb,
I also have a 96 LS400 in need of a changer. I gather you purchased the 97 unit assuming a fit. Didn't work? Seems like another forum guy here had the same experience. It really sucks that no one has build an adapter harness like they have for MOST other cars allowing other changers to work with the factory stuff. How hard can it be? Did Lexus have Pioneer and Nak redesign their changers to be completely incompatible???? Seems hard to believe.
Anyway, if the above is correct why does the 97 unit not fit? Harness? Other? Thanks.

Any '95, '96, '97 (2nd generation) LS400 CD changer will fit your 96. I found one for mine at a salvage yard (online). A local friend had promised me that I could have theirs out of their '97 at trade in time, but I grew tired waiting and ventured forth on my own.
Good luck in finding one as they are quite scarce. Even more scarce is the glovebox liner & trim kit. I ended up getting the liner/trim kit on eBay included with a CD changer for a 98 LS. I bought it thinking it would work in my '96 but alas the connector was wrong. However the glovebox kit fit perfectly. I finally found the right CD changer at a salvage yard in Omaha. Good thing I had the glovebox/trim kit as the one in Omaha was CD changer only. After I got everything I needed I sold the 98 CD changer on eBay for $100. A salvage yard in Oklahoma bought it.
The guy in Omaha said there weren't many LS400s in the salvage yards. Their value is such that unless they're a very bad "total" that likely someone will buy the bones and rebuild it. He said the only LS400s in scrapyards are ones that didn't get bought at the auctions.
