I took my 2010 LS460 with 55K Miles to the Lexus shop today with a new $1100 actuator (part# 04003-45450) for them to install. They read the code and tell me they need to replace the pump at the same time. They didn't do any diagnosis besides reading the code and explaining that the code is leak in the accumulator. I drove the car less than 100 miles with the warning lights and the car drives normal and pump runs intermittently with no loss of fluid. Should I insist on replacing the actuator only?

 

I believe, the assumption is that the pump is going to be damaged internally as much as the actuator. Technically you do not have to replace both, unless somebody can demonstrate that the pump is failing too. Make sure you do a complete brake fluid flush.

 

If you barely drove it the pump should be okay, I would personally still replace it since I would be paranoid since it powers the 2nd most important system on the car.

 

Yea, tough one. Some particles and debris did go thru pump and accumulator assembly most likely. Would I replace it? If part is readily available at reasonable price (pump assy) - yes, if not - flush and a prayer.
