Default New LS purchase today - Ext Warranty

Hey ,

I'm new to the board. I have owned LS 430 over the past 10 years. I'm picking up a 2017 LS 460L today. Car has about 40K on it from Lexus Dealer. I know they are gonna try to sell me an extended warranty when I try to finalize the deal. Is it worth getting it for this car? It has 2 years left on CPO warranty unlimited mileage. Please let me know your thoughts. What are the typical price on ext warranty's?

Thanks

Welcome and congrats. Of course as you may or may not know, without photos, it never happened. ;-) My opinion is, since you have 2 years left on your CPO I'd stick with that for now. I believe you could always pick up something later if you wanted. But, if they do offer, if the price is right, it might be something to consider. Good luck.

2 years of CPO is long enough to get everything sorted, unless you have air suspension - in which case the extended warranty will pay for itself (but MAKE SURE that warranty covers the air struts).

If no air suspension, an extended warranty is probably a waste of money.

If they try to sell you a warranty, ask them why they don't have confidence in the quality of the product they are selling you, and tell them that maybe you should reconsider buying the car if that's the case. That usually shuts them up.

If you have air suspension and other upgrades, then an extended warranty will give you peace of mind. I bought the Lexus Platinum VSA (which covers the air suspension and then some) for 10 years/125K miles in 2016 for $4300. It hasn't paid for itself yet because my air suspension etc. is doing great, but I have another 45K and 3.5 years left on the warranty.

If you decide to buy the Lexus Platinum VSA, you must do so before your new car warranty expires (50K or 4 years from 1st date of purchase, whichever comes first). It will add on to the end of the CPO warranty. The warranty is pricey and you have to get it from the dealer selling your vehicle or another in-state dealer. I bought mine for a very good price from Toby Rivers in Shreveport before he stopped selling across state lines. The peace of mind is worth it for me.

I feel differently than the other posters and I may be in the minority of this hotly debated topic.... I came from 2 LS430s a 2001 and a 2006. My 2011 LS460 which I have now had for just over 4 years has not been as reliable as my LS430s at all. I bought the car CPO which back 5 years ago also came with 2 years unlimited mileage and then I extended it for another 2 additional years so I had 4 years unlimited miles. The warranty I got was an extension of the CPO warranty it is the exact terms and exact same list of covered items. I was told it could only be purchased at the time I bought the car as the car was now out of manufacturer warranty and was strictly being sold as a CPO. I am more than thankful I did. The warranty paid for itself many many times over already. They are reliable cars but they are still expensive to fix. I would actually argue unlike what the other two said above that the car is not that old right now. but after the 2 years CPO is done its another 2 years old and that's also when things may start to go wrong. I also took into consideration that I could take my car to the dealer, get a loaner and have all service documented at my Lexus dealer. If I were paying out of pocket for these repairs I probably would seek an independent. Lets say I paid $3000 for the warranty. The heater exchange issue and navigation issue I had alone paid for the warranty. Each time I take it in for repair they marked the paperwork that I have an extended warranty so they they knew cost was no object.

I do not think offering or buying a warranty says anything at all about the confidence in the product. Things break. It's a mechanical item. Nobody can predict the reliability of a mass produced item. There's a reason every manufacturer has occasional lemon cars. It happens. Does the dealer make a profit on the warranties? Absolutely. Might you not make all your money back? It's certainly possible but they have lost money on me with my car. Lexus has a pretty good reliability rating and it is the main reason I have driven them for so long. Other cars look better to my eye but are not reliable enough for me. I love the S-class and could afford one but many of my friends have them and they are just not as reliable as a Lexus so I have resisted the temptation. Even with a warranty it's still an inconvenience to bring the car to the shop and be paying a car payment to drive a loaner. Peace of mind does come at a price in some instances.

If you have more than one local dealer, call each and ask for the Finance Manager and have him give you a quote. I’ve found a $500 variance just with two phone calls, before negotiating. Same vehicle you are considering. The loss of Toby and cross-state line sales, is a killer, given the extreme markup on these.

just have your VIN and miles available when you call or email them.

Gorgeous car, congrats! You are in for a treat with many miles and years of driving pleasure!

Please post more pics inside and out. I prefer your split-spoke hollow wheels over the propeller wheels on mine. Are they 18-inch?

I am guessing you paid 40-45K depending upon the options. Did you buy the Platinum VSA?

Beautiful car. I think you made an excellent choice. One less thing to worry about for several years. Just drop it off and let them fix it if something goes wrong.

I bought the extended warranty for my 2010 LS 460L and never used it once. The car had 29,xxx on the clock and now it is about to turn 85,xxx. That was 6 years ago.

I’ve had a 420 and a 460. Only major I’ve ever had (and I had it on both of them) is the air suspension system....repair was $9600 on the 460. Just sayin

I bought a 2013 LS460 in 2016. They offered me an extended warrantee for $3500, which I rejected. I told them I was not interested. I did not negotiate. Before I walked out the door, the price was $1,800. I felt that that was a good deal. This extended the new car warrantee until 2021. So far I have used it to replace the clock, nothing else has been a problem. Remember - Insurance is a bet you hope you loose!!
