Quote: They are quiet but in relation to what other vehicle? My best suggestion is to drive one so you get personal experience.
Back when the LS430 came to market, the "Speed Channel" did a show on the "New" 430 and compared it to the M-B S-Class, the BMW 7 Series, the and top of the line Audi.
The 930 was The quietest car in the group..

Quote: I actually do have a decibel meter that I've used when driving cars.

For your experience with the LS460, it totally depends on tires, which is also true of the LS430. With tires out of the equation the 460 is just as quiet as the 430 if not quieter. My LS460 has basically no tire noise unless the pavement is coarse, but I have very good tires. Tire noise and expansion joint noise is the same as it was in my 430 and 400.

The new ES is also very quiet, but the difference between the ES and the LS is road noise. The ES is not as well isolated from tire and road noise as the LS. Remember when you drive a new ES its on brand new tires and a used LS is on tires that have some wear.

My LS runs about 58 dB at 70 MPH. My Pacifica is 62, the new ES350 I drove was 59, my buddy's 2016 ES350 is 60.
Hello sir how are you?
Just quick question what tires do you use on your LS460?
I just got a 2007 model but it's sitting on winter tires that are quite noisy but I will probably leave it for the season and get new summer ones when the white s**** melts.

I would run Pirelli P7 the latest version...

Did a roadtrip on I-35 yesterday and was less than impressed at how loud the car was.
The roads in Texas are generally coarse asphalt or concrete and the speed limit is 75 mph (sometimes higher) so there are a confluence of factors working against the car. 75 dBA in the cabin for hours. In terms of road noise, I have to say that my 2019 X3 was far better. The constant roar was super annoying.
On the coasts this trip surely would have been very pleasant. I've taken trips up and down both recently in lesser quality turo rentals and had no issues with noise.

'16 LS460L with 38k miles, Pirelli P7 AS Plus 3 tires with about 9k miles. Clean as a whistle mechanically.

In Texas you have a lot of concrete and they do a lot of chip-sealing of roads which creates a lot of road noise. Road noise is not as well insulated in the LS compared to say an S Class, thats why tires are so important to the LS. We have a few chip-sealed roads around here and the difference in isolation is significant from my LS460L to my S560, and then even from my S560 to my S580.

You might want to try foam filled tires. That type of chip sealed pavement is specifically what the foam filled tires really help with. My S580 has foam filled tires...

Check out this video and you can see the benefit of the foam filled EV tires specifically on that type of road surface:

It would be interesting to find how much tire drone the foam inserts could mute on concrete highways. Our Tesla Model 3 had foam Michelin Primacy tires from the factory (NOT a quiet machine at all past 45-50 mph).
Realistically, it's time to take your advice and choose an S-Class. Having road tripped on similarly junk roads in the W222 (a 2015 S550), I can say it was extremely pleasant. Also equipped with run flats on giant wheels, like most S-Classes seem to be.

The S580 is seems like the way to go. Will have to take this back to the MB forum...

Foamed tires do indeed make a stunning difference on concrete or grooved roads, I didn't think it would matter much but it really helped on my dads RR

@SW17LS I got an ES 350 2016 thank you so much for your help and keeping me humble. I saw your review on the LS460 L AWD and I know that I am definitely going to get one in the near future.
