Default Need a new battery, what specs?

Hi guys
So brands aside because we do not have the same brands here, except bosch. And I do not think you guys have Varta which is German.
There are no specifications for the batteries to be found anywhere. I also cannot find the specs for the now discontinued ones that toyota provided with the car.
So I only managed to find one site which said minimum cranking amps needed is 585 but there is nothing about mAh or anything like that.

So I am thinking of getting an AGM battery, but I wonder how high I should go with cranking amps and mAh, I do not intend to put lots of strain on the system but I do have extra lights and sirens and what not which I do not use all the time obviously but, something to think about.

if you could post what you have brand and model (so I can see what size you have) especially if you have a higher end AGM battery because those seem to be longer. And what the specs are if you know.

THANKS !

DieHard Platinum AGM, Group 34 (850 CCA / 135 RC) for the last 4-1/2 years in our 2007 LS460L; it is a re-branded Odyssey 34-PC1500 battery. In full discloser, it just went back to a standard Costco Interstate battery, but only because my son now owns the car and wanted a quick fix when it got run down; it is his daily driver. I can't bring myself to turn the old battery in for the core, since after spending a day on the charger it now tests fine, so has become a spare. The main advantage of AGM is that you can abuse them by drawing them low and they will usually recover, and they don't leak acid or outgas like a standard battery. Still it is hard to compete with a $100 Costco battery that has free replacement for 3 years; certainly swapping out the battery for a fresh, readily available one is appealing. If only Costco carried the Interstate AGM line.

You seem very knowledgeable about batteries. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. As you explained, the AGM batteries have the advantage of being able to be resurrected from near complete discharge without suffering permanent damage, while the flooded cell batteries are often permanently damaged by discharges below 50% SOC. You told us, above, that you have charged your excessively discharged AGM battery and that "it now tests fine." Can you tell us what test or tests that you used to determine that it is fine?

I've looked at my options:
I have to choose between 2 brands, Bosch and Varta and I have to decide if I want AGM or non-AGM maybe an EFM type battery.

Here is the weird thing that is happening now, of course the battery is low we know that, but when I am in the car, the car will not start with the door open. Does this happen usually when the battery is not low?

I like the BatteryMINDer chargers. I have one specific to AGM charging, as well a more recent acquisition that will hand those as well as flooded. They both will rates the battery condition and charge based on temp and condition and will detect a bad cell as well as indicating condition with LED lights.

These are the two I use:
  • BatteryMINDer Model 2012-AGM: 12Volt 2 Amp Battery Charger-Maintainer-Desulfator
  • BatteryMINDer Model 128CEC1: 12Volt 2/4/8 Amp Battery Charger-Maintainer-Desulfator
I always measure voltage with a multimeter when the battery is new, and then again anytime I charge it (after giving it an hour or more to rest). With age you will find the max voltage you can obtain will drop, so that and the indicators on the charger are what I base a "good" battery on. Even an AGM battery won't last forever, but I've found them to be less problematic. Best advice for a vehicle that is driven infrequently (or that has a parasitic drain) is to add a shutoff blade switch to the negative terminal and maintain them on a good charger, so they are ready to go when you are. Even the AGM in my daily driver (LS600h) goes on the maintenance charger occasionally to help it last.

Bosch and Varta are both good brands of AGM batteries.

I've not experienced that, but the owner's manual for the LS600h does mention the driver's door after opening/closing, though it does not explain why ...

After recharging/reconnecting the 12-volt battery
In some cases, the hybrid system may not start. Follow one or both of the following procedures:
After opening and closing the driver’s door, wait 10 seconds then attempt to start the hybrid system. (If the system does not start first time, repeat the procedure.)
With the shift lever in “P” and the “POWER” switch OFF, open and close any door, then attempt to start the hybrid system.
I see no such mention in the LS460 manual, so perhaps only is relevant for hybrid system.

thanks guys, I have bought the following battery:

Voltage [V]: 12; Voltage [V]: 12; Battery capacity [Ah]: 95; Battery capacity [Ah]: 95; Cold start current EN [A]: 830; Cold start current EN [A]: 830; length [mm]: 306; length [mm]: 306; width [mm]: 173; width [mm]: 173; Height [mm]: 225; Height [mm]: 225; Location of the poles: 0; Location of the poles: 0; Execution of the bottom bar: B01; Execution of the bottom bar: B01; Type of clamping chain: 1; Type of clamping chain: 1;
Battery BOSCH S4 ASIA RIGHT [+] 12V 95AH 830A 306 * 173 * 225

Which ran me 3300 UAH which is maybe a bit more than 110 Euros. the previous owner put in a crapola turkish batttery which was supposedly rated at over 100 Ah, maybe 125 cannot remember but AGM batteries anywhere close to 95Ah in those brands get really long and I do not think they will fit the holder and anything that will fit is about 85ah and since everyone is going with 95 and all the websites for varta bosch is suggesting a 95ah battery that is what i went with.

Let's see how long i lasts.

I will test voltage and alternator in the next couple of days.
