both sides are leaking, especially all the corners. I wonder if I somehow damaged the corners trying to remove and install the covers. They were a pain to remove and install because of the angle they sit in. Those long bolts that stick out from the fuel pump were in the way and I kept trying to find a way to slide the covers back to the original sitting. Maybe I bumped them to much.

i think those metal tubes might need to be pulled up and resealed from the bottom. That is where the oil is probably coming from.

any help would be appreciated.

 

I have yet to find a bottom seal!
Now you have me worried about the issue with the removal of the valve cover!

 

I am certain in some way you have damaged a seal, with the way you described the difficulty on install of the valve covers!

 

If anyone has any input on this valve cover/spark plug tube seals install issue we might gain some insight.

I am certain this was the issue, you may need to try the repair over, with more care?

 

it might not carry a special seal, only some sort of thread lock ointment of some sort. The car has about 170,000 miles.

I’m just surprised that for a lexus it’s been nothing but issues.

 

Car repairs are not a simple task, believe me I have been there making a living at it!

 

I’ll take it to the dealership (which I will hate based on the expense) to get an idea of what I’m dealing with. I bet it’s something I’m overlooking.

The tube seal is 2 pieces. You can pull the harder plastic inner ring out of the outer softer rubber. If you do not push the inner seal down to the top of the metal tube you can get oil into the metal tube.

The inner piece comes out which allows more room for the removal of the coil pack and plug boot.

I purchased my parts from rock auto valve cover gasket set with seals.

1st time I pulled the valve covers.

2nd one I did the following:
If you look closely at the valvecover there are a couple small reliefs of each side around the seal. I used a small pry bar and gently lifted the tube seals out without pulling the valvecover.
I also used a little rtv around the metal portion which seals to the valvecover to make sure I did not have any repeat leaks.

So pull out the black plastic seal that seems to have a thread like shape from inside the rubber plug gasket and apply Rtv around it as I push down on the metal plug tube? Any pics? Maybe I’m installing them wrong.
