Default Costco Oil

Here in West Palm Beach Costco, Mobil 1 six pack (0w-20), $15 off at $23 and change. I've never seen it this cheap...usually just $10 off. Stock up!

I don't know what co. makes their oil, but I doubt it's any better than Mobil synthetic.

There was posts saying Lexus engineering wanted a different additive package for their engines versus what Mobil sells

Keep in mind that oil companies are constantly changing their formulas, additive packages and agreements with other companies/manufacturers.

For instance, just this summer I noticed Walmart's synthetic oil formula had changed (for what looked like the better). And the newer Dexos approved cirtifications - which most oils subscribe to - now require a minimum NOACK rating of 13. With most 0w20 oils getting down bellow ten, which I guess is an improvement.

But Toyota genuine synthetic has always been considered an excellent oil, and I'm sure it still is.

the toyota oil is better, with the addittives
regular mobil 1 is good for changes at 5-7k miles

the mobil 1 oil at walmart that i have mentioned to nauseam is mobil 1 extended performance is a much better mobil 1 for couple dollars more for 5 qt jug

recently pennzoil platinum have taken over mobil 1 because it is derived by natural gas not crude and is much cleaner.

happy driving

which is one of the reasons I always liked using TGMO....you knew you were getting the right formulation/additives. In addition, I was able to get it for cheaper than just about anything else when buying it in bulk from my local Toyota dealer.

Now that I have a Ford, I'm hoping I can get the Motorcraft oil cheap somewhere, as our Walmarts in Canada don't carry it.

All due respect but not sure why some are so high on TGMO. All I know is that Mobil 1 syn. is factory fill for many cars. Just saying...

i would think that the dual injection system and the larger than normal oil capacity and the extended change intervals and the low rpm nature of the engine might require a specific oil?

some reports here and other forums of some engines starting to use oil at 175k range.

The 346k full dealer serviced ls460 posted here is what I would like.

A certain amount of oil engineering seems to be a good idea to match the engine and the rings..

my engine builds for off road bikes has allowed me long term hard use oil comparisons.

Mobil 1 with its friction modifiers had nearly zero cylinder/piston wear.

Offset by much higher ring wear and very poor transmission gear mating teeth face wear.

gave away $130 of red top Mobil 1 after that.

Earlier Mobil 1 did not exhibit this.

my 63k-70k TGMO personal car test using 0-20 showed lightly discolored oil at the change and one quart consumption.

will change again at 77k miles and use TGMO 5-20 to see if any visible consumption difference

so high on it because it has additives like moly in small quantiities
mobil 1 over the last five to seven years has deteriorated.
the extended performance is the higher quality mobil 1
they changed the formula for the stock crude they use around 2013 i believe
or 2012

and for oil changes at 5k it almost doesn't matter
for extended times over 7500 it does

a quote from a thread on bob the oil guy forum

Yes, TGMO 0w20 is manufactured by Exxon Mobil, but its a much different oil than M1 0w20. Both are great oils, but in everyday driving I think TGMO has the edge. Thats what I would use

been a car enthusiast for 30 years
i read bob the oil guy forums not recently but love learning

its knowledge readily available,
dont over think
if you do changes 3-5k reg mobil 1 fine and not a worry

if you like extending the changes, get a synthetic filter and use the extended performance available at walmart
