I like the idea of listing out the good repair shops and possible reference name by the area. May be we can make a list and start a thread. I can provide information for Northern Virginia.

Known good shops by area would be a valuable resource for owners and I believe directing more Lexus work to the Indy would help the independent build their knowledge and aptitude of Lexus maintenance and repairs.
i wonder if the moderators could aid in posting a thread in the various Lexus model categories to capture and share the data. I think if it’s posted in the regional section nobody would see it, and if it was just the LS board it would limit the potential. If I spent more time on Toyota Nation, I’d try and get those guys involved. I looked around over there for indy suggestions as well, but had no luck.

I wish we all had good friends with an independent auto repair shop. Like Jafoo, I've shopped around auto work before in in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and the independents never seem to be much cheaper than the dealer; maybe 10% in some cases.
Has anyone ever seen a thread on this board listing good independent shops by region? I've gone hunting on the regional section of CL and it has very little traffic. $3500, even $3000 seems ridiculous for an AC compressor and service. $3500 would be about 1/3 of my cars value.

Hey rehr, thanks for the tip! I'm in Hudson, WI, just across the river, but I'd make the drive for RP as you described them. I know that with auto repairs, every interaction with any shop is a unique experience, but I like referrals and it takes a lot of the chance out of the engagement.
I like to do most of my own work, but two things goof up that plan. In the winter my one stall shop is tied up with my hobby car, and it's problematic getting it off the Kwiklift when there's Ice and snow in the driveway. The other thing is timing and convenience. When my starter does go eventually, I just might not be in the mood for crawling around under there and doing it myself.
To try and keep things simple; maybe I could just start a thread asking for favorite Indy including name and city/state. I could create a Indy spreadsheet by state and city and we could post that. It would be good to get the input from the other Lexus model forums. Thanks again, rehr!
