Default 2007 LS460L trunk locked open

Talk about bad timing! Just as we were about to head down the Bright Angel Trailhead in the dark at 7am to camp for 4 days/3 nights in the Grand Canyon, my ls460 trunk wouldn't close. I figured out a way to tie it and get the trunk to be closed by connecting a hole in my license plate and underneath the car and tying it shut. But when we returned the battery was dead ( I thought I had tied it tight enough to shut off the trunk light but it may have loosened up over 4 days.)
Anyway, I'm not sure how to deal with this trunk issue. Is the problem just that it somehow got locked in the "closed" position even though the trunk was still open, or do you think that there is something broken in the trunk latch? I have jammed a screw driver into the upper trunk latch and the light isn't on now, but the trunk is presently open in my garage. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Thanks for any help!

All the trunk problems that are mentioned in this and the other threads seem to be in 2007 and 2008 model years. Is that a function of them being on the road longer than the later model years or has the been a known redesign of some sort? I've got a 2007 and spending $1,000 or more on it for a trunk latch doesn't seem worth it. Thanks.

Greg, very valid question. I wonder the same but don't have an answer!.

I saw another post very recently on trunk issue with 2007 model. I have been following trunk issues as I personally believe it's insane to spend grand(s) to fix that.

One way to know if it's a design/production issue is to compare part numbers between 2007/8 models vs say 2011. If it's same, still could be a design flaw but Lexus for some reason chose to ignore that. If part number is amended in later year models, it will confirm design/material/production issue.

When my LS due for oil change will ask my service advisor.

Satiger,

Thank you. I'll also ask my indy when I go in for my next oil change.
