  • If the 600hL owner's manual differs, like for example, it does not include the words "if equipped," then that means that some 460's could come equipped with the card key.

I can tell you in my Toyota and Hyundai-Kia factory experience, that the factory (including all the way down to the line workers) do not distinguish a vehicle via its model (460 vs 600), models are only distinguished by VIN. I have read (but don't know the fact) that all 600hLs are GL1EFs. Which mine is as well. A rare 460 that is a GL1EF.

This is why it is my proposition that the card key came with GL1EFs. Yes, an interesting thread indeed!
Couple things, for what they are worth...

My 600 is a DU1EF.

Separately, my manual just shows the card as standard, with no "if equipped" language, so as I posted earlier, I suspect this is/has been an option outside the US, and the manual is just translated.

An extreme example of such an option is the gauge cluster in my 600, which is unique to MY 2010-2012 LS600hLs. As I understand it, it was an option on the 460L in Japan (together with a bunch of other stuff, like cool leather colors, etc.).

Steve, it sounds like you may now be in good shape. However, in the event you are not, I just thought of someone who may be able to help identify the proper part (if available), so feel free to post/let me know.

Default Why do the FOBS get Bigger

Hi, I was looking into this Credit Card Key, and just wondering why these FOBS for the LS 460 (i have 2014) are so large?

My 2006 Avalon has a nice small FOB with push to start.
My 2012 Lexus RX 350 has a smaller FOB
My pilot has the remote integrated onto the key head.

Seems like they should get smaller over time, especially since they do not really offer any added benefits.

Thoughts or Facts about this?

I have no idea why the fobs for the LS460 are so large. They use a specific fob just for the LS, but it is significantly larger and heavier than other Lexus fobs for no reason.

All you have to do is look at this credit card key and realize how small key fobs could be if they wanted them to be.

My head is going to explode lol. So I got the card key that I ordered with the LS460's specific part number. The FCC ID is HYQ14AEB, not HYQ14ACX which is what my original fobs are. The AEB ID was the one I was going to buy for $50 less than I paid for this one with a different part number. PLUS...this key doesn't have a blank key insert, I have to buy that separately for $50 (it was included with the cheaper key). You would think the dealer who I corresponded with over email about this part would have said "hey, it needs this key insert". Morons everywhere.

I wish I had never even tried to make this work lol. Will try and get it programmed tomorrow and report back. I'll just forego the key insert if it works.

sounds frustrating.. One would think that Lexus would have these already set up via VIN in their system, as they are usable and available for all makes/models and they even work on most Toyota vehicles.

mine didn't come with the insert either, I bought it from my dealer and it came pre-cut..

BTHOOM as well...I remember reading "The Elegant Solution" which tells the story of how Toyota put innovation into deliberate, intentional practice in developing the first generation LS. One of the things the team did was to buy keys from every major competitor to study and compare and ultimately make the LS key "better". I'm a big Toyota/Lexus fan but some of these finer points have gone missing in a few areas....

And that original key was very cool, small, one simple button to lock and unlock on the edge...

These things just never cease to amaze me. PPL are too lazy these days and they just don't pay attention to detail. It's really frustrating.

It continues.

So my closest dealer I don’t care for told me $50 when I called last week, now it’s $60. Whatever. Can’t give me a price on the key insert, they need the vin. So we’ll play roulette on that. They can just do it at the parts department though, so no wait and no drama.

I called the dealer I bought the car from, they wanted $90 to program it (it literally take one minute, I’ve watched it done), and they say it has to go through the service department, no loaner and it will take 1-2 hours.

maybe your dealer might wrap it into another service if you can wait until you have an oil change or some such done, mine did and only charged me $50. If I did it by itself and tied up a tech it was $150.. just a suggestion.. PM me if you want a copy of my invoice that shows the programming charge it might help, I've given a copy to 4 other members that used it to negotiate a lower programming fee.

Can’t you pick up Toyota Techstream on eBay or amazon for less than 60 and just program the key yourself? The techstream will come in handy for future use too?
