Default Transmission Issue?

Hi all...

Just took my 2007 LS 460 L in for it's 100K service. I let the service manager know that since the last service at 90K miles the car hadn't "felt right." Basically, it was running "rough" and surging a bit. The other day I seemed to lose the peppy acceleration, but it came back in a few minutes. Didn't think much of it, honestly.

Service manager tells me today "we got an error code when we ran the diagnostic". Something, something, solenoid, something...your transmission is on it's way out. I say, can it be fixed? Reply: We don't do transmission work here, but we can get a new one for around $5K.

So...reaching out the forum for advice. Any suggestions or thoughts on the situation? Time for me to find a new, gently used LS or...? Go to a transmission shop, perhaps? I'm in Miami, if that helps...

Thanks in advance...

Get a second opinion. It should be fixable unless its burnt out which i doubt.

Does this occur in the morning at start up and how cold has the temp been? A cold start will make it feel sluggish until the transmission fluid warms up.
Get the transmission filter and 3 qt fluid drain done. Don't do a full flush. I think that runs about $250 at the dealer. I have 92K miles on my 2008 and plan on doing it soon.

If it is a solenoid problem they are replaceable and there could be other things that are easily repairable causing the issue....... I would not "loose sleep" over this until you get a second opinion from a well known "local" transmission shop. Post up your location and maybe someone here can give you a reference.

Thanks, all...

I'm in South Florida / Miami. Lexus of North Miami did the service / gave the quote (edited: $7K incl. labor). If anyone has any recommendations for a local shop, I'd appreciate it.

Running rough and surging usually has nothing to do with the transmission. More likely, something was not reinstalled properly during the 90k service. Did they replace spark plugs at the 90k? If so, they might have left a coil connector not fully engaged which would cause this. Also, the mass airflow sensor connectors may be loose. Finally, the hose clamp at the throttle body could have been left loose. Every one of these items gets disturbed when replacing the spark plugs.

It would be nice if the OP knew what code/codes are being thrown after the dealer did the scan.

Transmission solenoid failure doesn't mean transmission is going down. A voltage fluctuation (high or low) or debris in transmission fluid could short circuit the fluid. That can be replaced by non dealer. As others stated, I would get a second opinion.

Did you replace battery recently?. Do you have service history of this car?. Transmission fluid change in the past?.

There relatively low mileage transmissions available on eBay for $1200. I would never pay more than 3k total including labor.

The transmissions in these cars are very reliable, I'd really be surprised if yours was on the way out.

No call back on the codes yet...will try again tomorrow

I looked through the service history...doesn't appear that it's had a transmission fluid change. No battery change recently (2014 was the last time). I've had it since 2011 and ~35K miles.

If you had requested a proper diagnosing service and paid for it, they would typically make a note of their finding in car's service history. Since you already have access to that site, did you see any history on this diagnosing?. Did they do a load test on battery?

I think you will be better off going to different dealership or to A
amco or any such places...........
