Dealer put 5w-30 in my Ls 460, instead of 5w-20
Hello everyone,
I just joined this forum 5 minutes ago. This site is great! I took my 2007 Ls 460 with 71,000 miles to a Toyota dealership today, to get the oil changed. Once they completed the oil change I paid and then left. While at home,I viewed my invoice and it says "changed oil & filter 6 cyl only". So, I called the dealer and asked what type of oil was used. The rep says 5w-30. I told him that was the wrong oil and he said to bring it back in, and he'll take care of it. My question to everyone; is this catastrophic to my engine and should I push them for an engine flush? Or should they drain the 5w-30, change the filter and refill with the 5w-20? Thanks in advance for your input.

Lexus 600hl, thanks for your input. I took my car back to the dealer and they did a drain and fill. They apologized for using regular oil the first time, and gave me a complimentary oil change lol. The service rep actually said "oil is oil, so don't worry bout it". I drove the car to the grocery store and when I got back in the car and started the engine, the whole car shook for about 10 seconds. So I'll be back at the dealer in the morning.

I've been using Castrol fully synthetic 5W30 since the 5,000 miles mark (I have 76,000 miles on the odo). I've never had a single issue with my car.
I have an American LS460, and once tried Mobil 1 - 5W40 and the car was vibrating when I'm at a complete stop. So I switched back to 5W30 and the car got back to normal.
Bottom line: don't worry about it. At all. No engine flush no nothing. Just forget about it.

in my opinion that oil is to thin in general but 5w-20 vs 30 isnt that much of a difference to be concerned about. Synthetic would be my top choice though for a low mileage vehicle since it is much cleaner than conventional oils.

Sounds good..there will be at least one modded 460 and one modded 600hL there..hopefully some of the other LS folks come by. Hope you can make it..glad they figured out the oil situation.. if you want, you can buy your own oil cheap at Walmart and a 3 pack of oem oil filters cheap online then take them to the Lexus dealer near you and they will charge around $30 labor to do it for you but it also includes the other services they do during the oil change along with a dealer update into the Lexus service history. Its a little cheaper that way and you can get the oil you want.

I believe there was a TSB for 0w20 oil in our LS's....I use Mobil 1 at Toyota dealer when I can't get in to see my mechanic...gets better gas mileage if that helps.
Hope I can make the meet too....newborn baby tho so we'll see!

How so?
why are people putting in 5w-30 in their 460? car is spec'd for xw-20, and unless you live in the middle east, you should use what is spec'd for...
FYI.. toyota 0w-20 synthetic is one of the best 0w-20 in the market... great enough for other brand drivers to drive to a toyota dealer
