Is $40,000 for a 2008 LS460 with under 12,000 miles a fair price?

I think you can do better..the miles are low but depending on build date, it may be out of time for 4 year/50k warranty... the mileage aspect means nothing when it comes to warranty since it is past 4 years potentially. This car is tops for reliability so you can search for one with maybe 30k or more and get all the options including Levinson, comfort and luxury packages. I just did an auto trader search and found a 2009 with 39K miles CPO for $44k and you could get it down to $40k probably...don't forget about brokers and my credit union gave me a platinum warranty with zero deduct for $1000 bumper to bumper minus wear and tear items that require scheduled replacements. Bottom line, deals to be had with patience and grinding on that keyboard search

The one thing that sticks out to me about the 2008 is that, according to the Technicians I spoke with before buying my 2009, was that they were still using timing belts in 2008 and switched to a chain in 2009.....if that matters.
Also, I was good with higher mileage so I wasn't paying a stupid premium on lower mileage vehicles. Here in UT they were always getting 2008 or 2009's with around 20k miles but they wanted (and were getting) $45,000 constantly. I got a 48k mileage car for just under $38,000.....

What he's saying is the 09 with higher mileage has a CPO warranty and therefore some comfort zone on repairs because if you get the 08, you only have until the end of this year before your warranty is gone. With the CPO you have the remaining factory, but then up to 100k miles or 3 years from purchase date which I would say is a better way to go IMO.
Reliable or not, when something breaks, it's not an inexpensive vehicle to fix.....

So for a car that is as reliable as the LS is, you really think an 09 with 39,000 miles that costs more is a better deal than an 08 with 12,000 miles? Assuming I can get some $ off the price of this one and at least $2000 off the 09, I still think the 08 is a better value despite the CPO on the 09.
Reminds me, that many horses, once led to the very edge of the river bank, die of thirst, because they are too dumb to reach down and drink. -
Where's Ron White when ya need him ?

I really don't think a dealer is going to shave a lot of money off the price of a CPO car after they have to pay a significant amount to CPO the car. If this 08 is as they state, and all service records show no issues and apppropriate maintenance ( as claimed), I don't know what more you can ask for in a used car other than a warranty, which as stated above can be purchased at a reasonable price. I have bought and sold many cars before, so the reference to horses and water is not appropriate. It is only opinions we are dealing with here. I do appreciate the input on both sides, yea or nay.
Regardless, I'm going to look at it later today and decide, that is if it is still available, maybe for under asking price.

Looks like a nice car from eBay link, maybe you are destined to own it, your name is drchill, and the seller is chillMD, small world. I think 38 would be a good price, make him an offer and go from there.

Wow, strange coincidence. Very good investigative work. You outed me. Anyway, after the first couple of posts, I started really getting into character and honestly, started believing my own BS.
It was the best idea i could come up with when faced with the deadline of 6/14 when the Carmax offer and the dealer's trade in offer would expire, and the fact that 30 posts are required for listing in the classifieds and I only had 10 posts prior. I usually just read the forums ands have never really cared for Lexus products until driving a 2013 GS 350 on the track with the tour after which i bought the car.
This LS460 is a great car and can be had for $38,500 if anyone is interested.
Mods, do with me what you will as I am guilty, but I should get a few style points.

Dealers don't like cars on their lots for a long time and they have more spread to work with to make a profit even if you smoke a deal when it comes to used cars. Recently a member here got a CPO 2010 LS-L with executive seat package for $55k..that car books retail for $69k...so by assuming you won't get a deal at a dealer, you are potentially missing out on some deals. I bought mine from a broker for about $7k below book..took it to the dealer for all my warranty and TSB work since I had 6000 miles left on warranty and was offered a Lexus extended warranty immediately for around $2500 iirc.
And, if that car you are looking at was put in service May 2008...guess what, you have no warranty except perhaps the VSR extended warranty for powertrain. If a dealer doesnt want to deal..oh well..go to another one. Buying a car can be a part time job. If you put in some work and perhaps a one way flight to an out of state dealer to find deals, you will be posting up deals just like she did on her executive find! #DoWorkSon!!!
