For what it's worth, Pilkington isn't bad. It was OEM on some BMWs and Maseratis. Now Nippon Sheet Glass owns Pilkington.

The BMW 3 series uses Fuyao glass from China.

I am totally mistaken. I looked again and saw the Lexus name etched in the windshield, right over the inspection sticker so it was hard to detect of course, but when I saw the Lexus name, I stopped looking for DOT. I figured it was OEM windshield. That all I wanted to confirm. Thanks.

Nope. Pilkington is among the best for aftermarket.

Still...just feel better knowing that I got genuine Lexus. Especially when it was free!

On my 2009 LS, I had a PILKINGTON windshield installed 3 years ago. A small rock got under the wiper blade and scrached a nasty arc right in my line of sight on the original. It cost me about $1400. The good news is that the windshield is still fine, 3 years later. The bad news is that for the past year, I've had a problem with the rear view mirror falling off. I'm not sure if they used the original metal mount or if it was new with the replacement windshield. I suspect it was the original reglued and they did a bad job. Something happened after all the attempts to secure it...the black stuff started to come off. So for sure it wouldn't stick. I was ALMOST ready to get another new windshield with a new metal thingie. But I had the idea to clean the metal thingie with a grinder (to REALLY get all the glue off) and mount it about an inch toward the driver's side from the original spot. This was a week ago and so far, so good. If you really look, you can see what's going on both inside and out, but to the casual eye it's no big deal. A true OCD person (I'm close) probably wouldn't be happy.

Did the glass replacement work not come with a warranty? Mine came with lifetime warranty.... which is good in a case such as yours.

Ya know, I just assumed that something like that, three years later, is my problem. If the mirror comes off again I'll take it back and push the issue. Thanks for the nudge.

A mirror falling off is clearly not acceptable. Probably a bad installation. If the installer won't correct it, then ask your insurance for a new windshield. If they won't replace it then a big rock might be the best option. Not saying who or where you should throw it.

I have a $1000 deductible. I wouldn't put in a claim for $1400. (Over the years this has saved me a lot of money, although the occasional ding or windshield does cause me to dig into my pocket)

I changed from a 1000 ded to a 200 ded and the cost per year only added a few bucks to my annual insurance. This is a no brainer for me to have , as I seem to get a ding every other year. I left my collision ded at 1000 though.

that's my calculation also. right now I am just trying to find a shop that can find the right "aftermarket" windshield and I will make a claim to get it replaced.

learning a lot here after I bring this thread back alive.

had a rock to hit my mines yesterday and cracked it. I called my insurance and they said that they will replace it with $0 out of pocket (no idea how much the glass cost). Safelite is doing the replacement I be sure to ask the tech when he arrives for the cost of the glass and ill post it.

has anyone got their windshield replaced in Northern California in the Bay Area? Or know a shop that has a lot of experiences replacing windshields on our LS460 or just Lexus. Thanks.

I checked a shop near by my work. They said the aftermarket don't have DOT number on it on the windshield. Are they just saying it or some aftermarket really don't have DOT number?

If it doesn't have a DOT number on it, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole! It must be counterfiet and clearly not acceptable by U.S. standards and requirements. A clear safety issue, not to be ignored!

I went to the shop again and finally they found out the DOT number, only told me it's not Made in China, and this is what I find online:
DOT NUMBER: 177
Manufacturer: L-N Safety Glass S.A.DE C.V. of Mexicali
Website: www.pilkington.com

Joeb427 says it's good aftermarket.
