Craig's right, a dealer will rape you. The only way to go is private sale.

I think it depends on how much they're trying to rape you & where you are - the laws regarding sales taxes for a trade-in where you're located.

Where I am, they charge 17 % in taxes total for a high end luxury car like the LS & the S-class, but you only pay the taxes on the difference in the price of the new car & the trade-in value. Here I don't think I would even bother with a private sale, since that may not justify the amount of taxes you save for a trade-in with the dealer, & you have the hassle of answering inquiry phone calls for a private sale & taking prospects for test drives.

well he's not trading in, he's just selling, so no gain

plus in cali, i don't think there is such law about paying tax on difference only
