Default LS 460 Maintenance Questions

Hello all, I have a 2013 LS 460L that I bought a little over a year ago with 91,000 miles. I have 116,000 miles now. I am the third owner, I bought the car from the local Genesis dealership where it was a trade.

I spent what I consider to be a good chunk of money to get this car to replace an LS 400 that I put over 100,000 miles on (sold at 232,000), and I am trying to plan for what it’s going to need to get to mid 200,000s before I decommission it.

So far, the car has had valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, and one ignition coil. I don’t think its’s needed much else or had much else done in its lifetime. It’s a great car and I would like to preserve it because I don’t see a lot of modern alternatives that are good candidates to replace it when it wears out. Between the LS 400 and the Cressida I drove before that until it had high miles, I have found that the lifespan of rubber items always seems to be the limiting factor in how much time I can get out of them.

Here are some of the items I have questions about:

I have been advised that brake fluid should be changed to lower the risk of actuator failure. Is it practical to replace the fluid bit by bit by sucking out of the reservoir and replacing, or does the system need to be fully flushed? Is there a procedure for this, and is this something best left to the dealership?

I understand that this car has a ton of control arms with rubber bushings. I also believe I have read that the 2013+ cars are less susceptible to control arm bushing wear than the earlier cars. But I have had RWD IRS Toyota cars in the past that I ran up to mid 200s, and I know that I can’t expect these bushings to last that long with zero degradation in ride quality. My question is really, do owners of 2013+ LS460s with high mileage find that they have to replace many of these control arms at some point to maintain ride quality? A Lexus dealer did mention to me at one time that the front lower rearward arm bushings were beginning to show some signs of wear; I don’t think they’re critical yet but I may have those particular arms changed out at some point.

Are sunroof leaks common? I noticed recently while cleaning the interior that there seemed to be some water staining on the headliner at the driver’s side rear corner of the car. Is this likely a clogged drain? The sunroof gasket shows a surprising amount of cracking for a car that has been well maintained and garaged. Is this common? Should I have this gasket replaced?

How long do motor mounts typically last? I feel that I am at the mileage now where most cars need them. The car has always had the low-speed transmission whine that I understand there is a bulletin about citing the transmission mount, and recently, I have noticed a new vibration in the car at high speed/low RPM cruising, which feels like a probably engine or transmission mount to me. I think I should be considering engine and transmission mount replacement, probably at a Japanese specialist rather than a dealer to save cost, but I am dreading the bill.

Some other odds and ends, the tire pressure monitoring system does not work when it's cold out, and throws a light, but still works in the summer. I realize this is due to one or more of the batteries being at end of life. The tire shop tried to fix this when I had tires put on, but said the new sensors they tried to put on wouldn't communicate with the car. I am sure the Lexus dealership could figure this out, but I am dreading spending an arm and a leg just to fix something I lived without for years. And I know I need to replace the original serpentine belt soon. But I don't think I have any questions about those items.

I am knowledgeable of the valley plate leak issue in these cars, but this car does not consume coolant so I am not worried about that at this time.

Anything else I am missing?

A bit of a coincidence, I had a 90 Cressida then a 96 LS400 and now a 13 LS460 F Sport. I'd just do the repairs as they come, your list is pretty good and you should add a trans service of some type.

You definitely understand my car choices then!

I did already have a Lexus dealer check the transmission, since obviously there is no dipstick and it can only be checked by procedure as I understand it. They told me the fluid looked good and was up to level and they didn't reccommend service at this time.

Do you have the service history for your vehicle? if not be preventative so you don't cause any damage, i would do a drain and fill on the trans and then start the mileage clock from there...
