Watch out for rust on door hinge mounting bolts
Just the other day I noticed that rust was starting to creep up on both rear driver and passenger side mounting bolts. The paint started to flake off so I had to sand off the rust and use some touch up paint to fix the problem.
Also I noticed that the hinge pin is starting to rust from the inside out. I’ve never had any modern car have rust in this area, if anything I’ve seen it on my classic cars from the 60’s and 70’s, but nothing from any car made since the 90’s.
I should have taken pictures, but I was adamant in correcting the issue right away before the rusting got worse. Have any you guys noticed this on your 460?
I recommend taking a quick glance at those mounting bolts to see there’s any small rust spots.
What makes me believe why this has happened is a combination of 2 things, I wash my car at least once a week, and never thought about drying down the center pillar and down by those bolts. So after a car wash, the water sits and starts to corrode areas on the car that might have not been treated that well with anti-corrosion properties.
It’s a shame and shows that Lexus skimp out on paint protection on those bolts because on my 05 LS 430, the paint on the mounting bolts is super thick. You can tell a lot of extra paint went on those bolts for additional protection from water and moisture, but on the 460, the paint is noticeably thinner from just the looks of it.
I plan on spraying some silicone on those hinges and will continue to keep an eye on the bolts as well.

My car is OG from SoCal, so it has never seen any salty roads or snowy conditions, however I do live in inland San Diego, away from the coast, but we do get heavy dew (moisture) in the mornings and at night that settles on the cars. Even during the summer time like now, it can get pretty muggy so I also think that has somewhat to do with the surface rust.
I still think however, it’s from all the car washing and the water sitting in and around the bolts and hinges which never dries completely.
Even so, I too have never experienced rust on door hinge bolts on a modern car.
Also, it’s a know fact that California cars can rust, mostly from the top down, and if one lives near the coastline or close to it, while cold snowy states rust from the bottom up.
I’ll check out that rust inhibitor spray, for now I used some silicon spray and will keep on eye out on the bolts and will make sure to dry the bolts after each wash.
