Hi 305Busa, That service price is such a bargain. Did the tech have to drop the catalytic converters/exhaust and then remove the transmission assembly to get to those seals?

Honestly can’t say what they did to get the tranny off but I have the tech manual and it does say that the entire exhaust including the manifolds do have to come off. I’m sure they took off or at least loosened the exhaust because there are new gaskets on them.

I think 305Busa was talking about crankshaft rear seal. You have to remove transmission and the flex plate to get it replaced. If your transmission is already out it would make sense to replace that seal as a precautionary measure.

I've been noticing a fluid leak on my transmission exterior and an increasing worse shudder. The shudder is a resonating sound at around 1200 rpms and around 40 mph. initially thought it might be oil leaks but I resolved the majority of my oil engine burning/leakages issues.

I've had 2 drain and fills at the dealer for my transmission at 167.6K and 168.9K. In both cases, The shudder was at a minimum after the service and gets progressively worst over time.

I don't appear to have any leaks at the drain pan, drain plug or the fill hole. Any suggestions on what to do next to diagnose?

There doesn't seem to be a trail on where the dripping is coming from. Has anyone have the drip come directly from the bottom?

Have you found the cause for the leak and had it fixed? I noticed the same transmission leak on my car (2008 RWD LS460, 148K miles) yesterday when I was replacing the transmission fluid filter on my car.

Not yet. Currently at 176K now. I do get some transmission clunking noises at lower gears and the typical shudder when at 1200 rpm and 40-45 MPH speed. Tried drain and fill top off myself a couple of times but did not alleviate the issue. I used techstream to monitor the temperature and followed the guides provide here. Am resigned to replace with a rebuilt transmission when the times comes.

@swfla , What was your suggestions regarding motor and transmission mounts? My mounts are still the original. Are you thinking that new mounts could help with sealing the leak, retaining the necessary pressure for normal operations in the transmission, & fixing the shudder?

Thank you for the feedback, jeng9495. Since you have Techstream, before you replace the transmission, you may see if the "reset transmission memory" and "relearn transmission" procedures cure your problem (transmission shudders):
.
Reset memory procedure: In Techstream, go to the Powertrain/ETC/Utility screen, click Reset Memory. Then perform the transmission relearn/road test procedure below.
Transmission Relearn/Road Test procedure: Start your engine and wait for the tranmission temperature to reach 50-80C (122-176F) on your Techstream screen, take the following two steps:
-
  1. On a flat road, put the shift lever to D, gradually accelarate to 31 mph (50km/h) or more over a distance of 426 ft (130m) for a period of approximately 15 seconds. Then, gradually decrease to 19 mph (30 km/h) over a distance of 147 ft (45m) for a period of approxmiately 5 seconds.
  2. Put the shift lever to S4 position, gradually accelarate to 19 mph (30km/h) or more over a distance of 132 ft (40m) for a period of approximately 8 seconds. Then, gradually decrease to 6 mph (10 km/h) over a distance of 66 ft (20m) for a period of approxmiately 5 seconds.
Performing these two procedures may solve your transmission shuddering symptom.

Thanks for suggesting. I did try both of those after the dealer drain/fill and once with my own. Unfortunately I didn't get any improvement. I still have 4 quarts of WS ATF on the shelf and will likely just do another drain and fill later this summer for kicks.

i had the same leak and a really bad shudder. I replaced the transmission fluids and filter but the shudder didnt go away. I took it in to lexus and they told me i need to replace the transmission. I took the car home and try fill it in with lucas transmission but it didnt work so i drained the tranny fluids and fill it up with new fluids and this time i add on blue devil transmission sealer and the shudder went away. Its been a year now and still no shudder. The additive add on was my last solution because my shudder was really bad and i cant barely drive anymore. I just want to share yall my experience. Dont try it if you’re not comfortable

Or....2 drain n fills fixed your problem, I doubt the blue devil did anything.

Would I have to drain any fluid to add the 8oz of blue devil? in the youtube video

The guy runs a tubing to the top of the engine compartment to fill it.

The question is: Is the current level of my tranny fluid below this plug? Can I just pop the fill plug on the side of case and add the blue devil or would I have to pull the bottom plug and drain it all to refill it again?
