Default Rudimentary Speaker Repair Today

OK, so I was experiencing the dreaded cone rattle from the driver's door speaker on deep bass at anything above a moderate level.

Having read a report from someone who found that the surround had fractured at the join to the frame but was otherwise intact, I thought I'd see if I could do anything with it. And yes, the foam itself was OK; it had just torn away at the outer edge.

I ran a bead of clear silicone around it, profiling it into a 'U' shape with a spare nozzle, so that the bond is to the side wall of the plastic frame, if that makes sense. I've not tried to use it yet as it won't have cured, so will report back when I do. (I have a spare off eBay on order, just in case!)

What I can't explain is that that the passenger side one was fine! (Go figure!) I mean, it's not like the driver's side one is driven harder....

Getting the door panel off and on wasn't terrible, although I didn't disconnect the handle/lock linkages. There's a risk of pulling away the membrane, but the black mastic is fairly forgiving when you need to press it back into place. Also, there are a couple of cable anchors that press-fit into the speaker frame which can be a little awkward. Remounting the speakers afterwards was actually more difficult - i.e. getting the fixing holes to line up - visibility on that top bolt isn't great!

I re-foamed mine after removing them from the doors.
That silicone should do the trick though.

I think that it is sunlight that degrades the foams. That is why the Sub foam almost always goes first.
Could be that the car was always parked where the sun hit the inside of the drivers door, but not the inside of the passenger door.

Y'know I did think of that, but dismissed it on the basis that not *that* much sunlight could get through the grille, and also, on average over the years, both sides would have had similar exposure.

The sub has already been done. I've not examined the rear door units as yet...
