Default Timing Belt Replacement

I have a 2006 LS-430 and I have a question about a timing belt replacement procedure, I have seen where some technicians will advance the timing 50 degree before de-tensioning the belt to eliminate the tension on the cams, can you just line up the timing marks on the cams and crank and take the belt off if it moves a little just re-align and install the belt reason I'm asking is that I would like to use the marks that the manufacturer puts on the belts for you to use, versus marking the old belt and transferring to the new belt.

The 50 degrees is to unload the cams, as you stated. There are 2 sets of timing marks behind the cams. The dot is the 0 degree mark and the "T" is the 50 degrees advanced mark. The entire purpose of marking the old belt and transferring to the new one is to check if the new belt is marked correctly. If you don't want to mark anything just use the "T" timing marks but make sure the belt is in the correct position on the crank. Marking the belt literally takes seconds and is extra insurance that everything is correct. And if the cams move when the belt is removed, you can just move them back to where the need to be.

What brand is the replacement belt? Some of the marks on aftermarket belts can be a bit ambiguous. If you’re using a Toyota belt you’ll be fine not transferring the marks but it’s some of the cheapest insurance you’ll find to prevent a very painful headache. Just take a few minutes and do it for the sake of peace of mind.

Thank you so much for your quick reply and information that helps me make a more informed decision, I think I will advance 50 degree and just mark the old one and transfer to the new one, for extra insurance like you said, I never thought about what you said about the new belt not having the right locations thanks

It’s a trusted TB kit many here swear by it. At least verify the marks are consistent with your old belt, assuming the old marks are still visible, and proceed accordingly.
You will need to advance to 50 degrees regardless👍

Aisin is the only brand I use, whether for Lexus or others. Never an issue.
