Default Rear Struts

Hello friends, I have a 2004 LS430 base. I believe that my rear passenger-side strut has gone kaput. I hear and feel a clunk when I go over dips in the road.

What struts would you use in the rear for comfort? Would you re-use the springs or get a complete new assembly?

Price is an object, but I'm not a total tightwad.

thanks, Jim

Probably the Lower Control Arm bushing. Common issue with the LS430. Do some searches on that and you'll get the info you need to replace them.

Jack up your LS by the rear diff and put her on jackstands. Pop the wheels off and examine the rear shock bodies. If the seal fails on either one, there will be oil on the shock body and it will attract dirt and road grime. Easy way to know for sure if they have failed or not.

I'd say your only options are stock struts at $190 each from a discount OEM vendor, or KYBs from Amazon for $100 each. If you're going to pay someone, the parts will obviously be more expensive and you're probably looking at 2-3 hours in labor. If you're going to do it yourself, there is a great how-to on this forum; https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...del-ls430.html

My driver's side rear is shot due to seal failure... just haven't gotten around to knocking it out yet. When I do, I'm planning on using OEM.

Thank U, Caverman. I will definitely check into the LCA. Would the LCA have much effect on the ride quality? I rode in the backseat yesterday for the first time with my wife and father-in-law up front. Our neighborhood streets are bad with bumps and dips. The ride seemed unreasonably harsh(plus the clunk) for an LS, but I have only owned the car a couple of months and don't have previous experience to compare it to. Thanks

Thank U Romanova, would the suggestions you made be using the original springs?

Also, on most shock/strut conversations I read, the name Monroe eventually comes up. Is that an option as well?

Thanks

Yes, use original springs, no reason to change unless you want lowering springs. Monroe is another option but the price is the same as the KYBs.

Before you start throwing parts at it though, make sure you figure out what is needed.
