LS430 bogs down at 3k RPM

LS430 bogs down at 3k RPM
Hey guys,
Today I test drove a 2000 LS430 (first of the 3rd gen shape). It had 221KM on it, and wasn't perfect, but hey its pretty cheap.
Anyway, I took it on a test drive and it had some big hesitations at around 3000 RPM. It would rev to 3000 RPM with no real issue, then sit there for a second or two, before going up to redline smoothly. It made heaps of power up top, and it didn't feel like a missfire. It seemed a little slow below 3000 RPM as well, but not SUPER bad
It also had the red triangle on the dash (service indicator?), then seemed to flicker - sometimes going away for a second or two - as I blipped the throttle.
What could the issue be? It was doing it in neutral as well as in gear, so I don't think its gearbox related.
The engine made a ticking noise, but I wasn't able to localise it with all the engine covers.
Otherwise the car seemed okay, so I'm just not sure what the issue is.
Blocked cats, dirty throttle body, bad O2 sensors?
