Thx - yes, will test today - I don't think these are going to work - they seem really tight when just trying to rotate the shaft and are 20 yrs old so I think you have good advice and I am thinking with the amount of work just order new - Thx for update
I did what you said and tested off the tilt wire socket ok - 3 out of 4 work- 2 tilt and 1 extend - so I went after it and am reinstalling - taking them out is easy - now the fun- 2.5 hours and I got the lower panel and dash panel off - fighting the c clip for 45 min. Taking a break because it's already hot out and will keep going tomorrow. Tilt is 1/2 installed except that frustrating c-clip - 1 have 2 spares and it's alredy been "find the flying C-clip. Lower motor and I almost got 1 bolt started on the 2nd motor - more fun tomorrow cause it's just getting to hot - (Florida)
Sure you probably know but wear eye protection when taking off and installing c clips. I have seen them go everywhere and be lost forever.
Good advice - got my specs on - and found a Neiko E-clip tool on Amazon - should make it easier - You do need to reinstall the small e-clip on the tile motor shaft. Also if anyone is trying this tilt motor replacement this YT channel hits a home run:
On the E-Clip, put a long piece of masking tape behind the clip and stick the other end of the tape to something fixed.
That way when the clip flies off it stays stuck to the tape.
Refitting them can be a PITA as it's fiddly with limited space, but again that piece of tape prevents it from flying into the 4th Dimension.
Well you were right about old motors - 1 of the 2 tilt is not strong enough - and I bought a e-clip tool that makes this a breeze to install the clips - A Neiko 01970A E-clip remove and installer tool.
I installed one and tested and the motor was working until you put stress on this motor when it is reinstalled and its a no go - 2nd one is working installed so I got lucky - so yeah - your right - buying used parts and YMMV - 2nd one works great - so 2 E-clip installs later and the tilt is a breeze.
Started in on the extension and it's already too hot - we got rain coming today and humidity is about 150%. Tomorrow is another day. Thx for all the tips and tricks and yes you have to get your best one's out to reinstall these motors - doable but a PITA.
For those who are replacing these tilt/telescoping motors, there was another post with official diagrams stating that these two motors work of ~100+ volts AC. Hence, be careful.
First, thank you everyone for your comments and help. They all were value-add.
I completed the telescoping motor this morning and manged to get the bolts aligned/started and the shaft assembley aligned. Got it reassembled - its a journey- could I do it again - yes - and faster -
Lower dash and lower inspection panel went on ok. Just having a small problem with the coin drawer below the mirror control. It won't pop out now using the button. Will work on that later.
Thank you
I did find that my telescope distance was maxed out and had caused the telescoping gear to slip out of the threaded holding bracket. The sterring wheel was maxed out to the farthest distance and the telescoping threaded rod was riding on the end of the holding bracket. Then I realized the holding bracket has a threaded insert and mine was stripped. I went to the junk yead to look at that 2006 LS and the shaft was in a completely different location. I grabbed that threaded holding part and bolts. The junkyard LS had the bracket more centered in the threaded holding bracket.
So I went home and removed the holding bracket for the telescoping gear and once that was off I gave the steering wheel a good push with both hands to get it closer to the dash and that worked. Reassembled with the junkyard threaded holding bracket that had good threads and its working - so I really got lucky on used parts. Will have to see how long these motors last but the tilt function and telescoping function is working well. thx again
Seems like as good a thread as any as somewhere to post this.
So, this is what passes for auto electrical work in the UK. And I'd been driving around for the past 3 years with this abomination behind the dash, blissfully unaware.
Only by chance, the other week, I discovered a 'consumer' cable with DC jack, hanging loose (albeit with the end taped up) hidden behind the driver's kick-panel, in front of the fusebox. Knowing that I wouldn't be able to sleep properly until I'd rooted it out, I thought I'd better tackle it today. So, having waded through the manual, I eventually found that the cover I needed to take off is called 'Instrument Panel Safety Pad Sub-assy No.1'. (Who knew, eh?)
What you see in the photos is what I was met with. Basically, what appears to be a redundant dashcam feed hacked into one of the looms and bound up with black PVC tape, along with a piece of wire spliced in. (Don't ask.) So now, I have to go to the trouble of finding a scrap vehicle from which I can obtain the plug and a few inches of loom, and re-make it properly so as to replace that which has been destroyed.
In this country there are no consequences for people that do this kind of stuff. Ignorant, arrogant yobs with no pride and no shame.
