Aisin (the Toyota water pump OEM) doesn't make "faulty pumps", however a counterfeit Aisin pump from China is a real possibility.
I have to jump through all kinds of hoops to buy ECU capacitors that are genuine Panasonic, Rubycon, Nichicon and Chemi-con by going through only factory authorized sources, due to the same rampant counterfeiting.
Always buy your Aisin kit via an authorized Aisin aftermarket dealer - you can contact Aisin to see if a seller is genuine by contacting:
Aisin USA Mfg., Inc.

All companies make faulty pumps at one time or another. Bad runs, poor materials etc.

Strongly suggest you change the T-stat when doing TB / WP. Lexus dealers don't always have the T-stat on the parts "menu" for TB / WP overhaul. It's a $20 part that has a rubber gasket seal that DOES deteriorate in the hot antifreeze over time. It's a hassle if it needs to be replaced later, and your engine won't reach operating temp, or worse, it overheats.

T-stat is very easy to replace. Preventive maintenance is even easier, IMO. If it goes bad at an inconvenient time / location (on the road), that's not pleasant. It's only a question of when, not if, it will go bad.

i am a firm believer of staying on top of maintenance sense working on aircraft.however i have never had a t-stat fail in the closed position and i have owned nearly 40 autos.my 86 mr2 has the factory t-stat and water pump but i change every thing else at half the require maintenance schedule.
also change the rad cap every 30k miles.i can change the t-stat in under 30 minutes so for me its not a big deal.

In cold weather climates like here in Chicago, stuck open is a big problem in winter - as it was for me this winter - since the engine never reaches operating temp. Little to no heat. Can't defrost windshield / side windows. If you can see out the windows, you freeze while driving. I'd hate to have it stuck open on a trip to / from Michigan. Georgia looks pretty good right about now!

I never saw one fail early yet. Maybe pumps fault but again maybe not?
Most times we jump on the newer water pump being the "problem" when this happens, but it may be "caused" by other issues.
Its a closed system so If the radiator cap seal fails or there's a leak in the system where the system fails to produce enough pressure it can happen. Without pressure building up high enough from the water pump pressurizing the system correctly just over a short time even a newer pump seal will deform and pump failure will occur. Its very common for older cars pumps to fail back to back just from their radiator cap seal going bad over time. The owner fixes the problem but not the cause of the problem so it bites us again.
Yrs ago I had a 91 4cyl pickup drive me nuts over a yr.
2 water pumps,1 radiator, 2 thermostats then I finally learned its my cap.
Hey' I didn't change the head gasket and heater core..lol Had I just done my pressure test sooner I'd knew it was my cap.
Needless to say I do change the cap every 100k or with every pump failure now.
I have to think by removing our radiator caps less the seal will turn hard & dry rot more, out of sight out of mind thing?
Just a thought since we used to remove them much more.

Ordered a kit From EBAY from a well known seller!!! Won't say who but letters are TL. Brand new water pump is leaking from the Vent tube!! Maybe one of those Chinese knock offs!! So now to order hopefully good Asin from Rockauto. Top it off, all "new" 3 seals are seeping!! So I'm wondering when my 4runners mitsuboshi belt is going to break. So will change out before 60k. I've learned my lesson.

I was thinking about ordering the Asin kits on ebay to have on hand to do the Tbelt/WP service this year and
after reading this I will bite the bullet and order from my local Lexus dealer.
PS- To be honest I been wondering if those Asim WP's flooding all over on ebay were knock offs too.
