so the check engine light will trigger the VCS? or do you mean the VCS & trac will come on at the same time?

I had various problems with dash lights coming on. It all started with the VCS light. The ultimate outcome was that some kind of rodents had taken up residence in the wiring harness. My local mechanic found a dead animal in the engine compartment and lots of chewed wires, all of which he dutifully documented on his phone to show me. There are lots of pretty funny stories on the internet about rats in the engine, except when it's your car it isn't so funny. It sounds like this problem is more common with cars left sitting and not driven very often, but I drove mine all the time. Just mentioning this because it is certainly not the first thing that comes to mind...at least not my mind.

 

oh yes, rodents... they love japanese wiring... i saw a rat once, that stood up on two rear legs and reached underneath the lower engine covers of some poor mitsubishi..
