Default Fuel Door will not lock

All

Went to my 2006 ML today to move my car (left on the uncovered area of the parking deck for a pollin wash during the rain here in Atlanta), and I noticed my fuel door slightly open. So I push it closed, and got in and moved my car. Got out of the car and noticed that it was open again. After investigating, I noticed that the spring that comes out that catches the door lock was stuck in. So I went to the trunk to pull out the lexus toolkit to use some pliers to see if I needed to pull it out. When I returned, the spring was fully released as it should be. So I closed the fuel door and it locked as it should. I played with the unlock switch inside the car a few times and it appeared to be okay. 5 minutes later, the fuel door was open again. Anyone experience this? Could it be just a fuse or something more serious? May seem minor but I don' t trust people when my fuel door is open.

Thanks in advanced.

Thanks Red. Is this the cable hanging near the toolkit? It actually hasn't happened since the day of this posting but I will check out that cable so that I know where it is in case it happend again.

Thanks
