01-03 UL's hard to find? + prices for LS430's rising?
For a couple of weeks now I've been monitoring ebay and cars.com for 01-03 LS430's UL. There is not one for sale! There are a few 04-06 CL's and UL's but not one 01-03! Where are they wanishing to? A few years back there was a good amount of them on the market, it seem like they were all bought out.
Two years ago my car was valued at 13,250 at KBB private party value, now with more miles it's at 15,250. How is that possible? I know lexus holds it's value much better than the competition but damn!
I also want to mention that I was offered to sell my car today! Dealer came up to me and said his client is looking for a nice 01-03 LS430 and if I wanted to sell mine. I refused, it got me thinking though.

I think LS prices are gonna be pretty strong - more people are becoming aware what a great value this car is as a used car. I can say unequivocally that used SC430 prices have been holding solid for the same year models over the last three years - zero depreciation on an 04 for example over last 3 years.

It was really hard finding a nice condition LS430 when I was looking a while back. I was looking for something around 2002. There were very few if any private sellers in Chicago area and I don't trust buying cars that old at dealers. I didn't want an auctioned car that was just cleaned up to sell. The only ones I found that I liked were near $15,000 until I stumbled upon the black / black 2002 I bought from a private seller for $11,000. It came with a folder full of receipts from the car being serviced at Lexus from day one.
In this area (NW suburbs of Chicago) I find that cars aren't selling for KBB prices. I have bought 4 used cars in the last year and sold 3 and I can tell you they are 10% - 15% under KBB selling and sometimes even more buying. If you are patient, you can find some good deals.

I think there are two factors happening with the LS holding value.
1) many people are moving to "proven" reliable used cars vs buying new/leasing.
2) when I was shopping for my LS, an auto broker told me that he has a Wait List for UL's to ship out to the Middle East when ever he can find them, and they are willing to pay a premium over US buyers.

ULs were built in relatively low numbers compared to MLs. Also, when searching be sure you determine if the car is a UL by the pictures, not the words. Often, ULs are listed as Premium by confused sellers.

Although my car is not a UL, I received a letter from the dealer I purchased my car from saying that the LS430s are in demand and they were willing to but my car even If I don't repurchase from them. Maybe they know something we dont. Is the 430s heading for classic status one day???? I certainly hope so. :-)

When I was searching for a LS430, majority of them were being bought and shipped to the middle east. I would usually call a day too late, but they seem to be getting a lot popular for sure.

When I was out looking - for about 6 months - almost every low cost LS example I saw was usually an "issues" car that was dirty/beat up, beat up paint job/dings, and/or smoked in, and/or prior accident, and/or zero maint rec, and/or high miles relative to model year, etc. For some reason there seemed to be a lot of beat, grungy LS430's out there when I was looking. At a retail used car level - the really pristine low mile cars are in short supply and are usually sold in a few hours or a few days at most ...and they do not go cheap.
