Just posting to thank ancdmd... it took a while but finally the damper (pressure regulator) on the passenger side got bad enough where I can watch the gas flowing out of the top of it. Just ordered a pair of them from Sewell. I'm hoping replacing them is as easy as it appears it should be.

Thanks for solving the mystery!

Default gas Smell

I have a 1996 lexus sc 400 and you can smell gas inside the car and outside the car even if your several feet away from the car you can smell it, it's horrible. There is no leak, what could it be? My child can't take the Smell, much less myself. Please reply asap, thanks!!!! 😁

November 20, 2014 — Lexus is recalling 422,000 model year 2007-2010 Lexus LS cars, 2006-2011 Lexus GS vehicles and 2006-2011 Lexus IS vehicles because they can catch on fire.

Lexus says the fuel delivery pipes in the engine compartment have nickel phosphate plating to protect against corrosion. Some of the pipes could have been manufactured with plating particles on the gasket seating surface where the fuel pressure sensor is installed. This can cause the sealing property of the gasket to fall apart which can cause gas to leak past the gasket.

Lexus says the recalled Lexus LS cars were manufactured May 9, 2006, to July 20, 2010; the Lexus GS vehicles were manufactured January 6, 2005, to September 10, 2010 and the Lexus IS cars were built August 30, 2005, to September 10, 2010.

The recall should begin in December 2014. Lexus dealers will clean and reseal the fuel pressure sensor mounting area. Lexus owners can contact customer service at 800-331-4331.

Default Sc430 Fuel pressure regulator

Have a raw gas smell in SC430. No local Lexus dealership, and they recommended I towed it for 300.00 to the nearest. I chose to take it to the local mechanic that works with my employer. They found it to be a fuel pressure regulator. I felt a little concern due to the guy didnt know if it was missing a screw or not. From what I can see what he is calling the FPL is a damper. So first question are they the same? Located front left driver side. On the other side of engine there is a similiar one with a screw. So I am thinking each bank has one. Have no idea.

Reluctant to take to the Toyota dealership since they told me my throttle body and water pump and thermostat needed replaced not to drive off the lot. I called Lexus they said walk away slowly. Years later the car is fine. It was a radiator cap..

So can you guys direct me in the right direction on whether FPR and damper are the same? And any photos... I know it takes about 30 mins to replace.

How difficult to replace

Well, I have had the exact same problem. Gasoline smell in trunk and in cabin. But the funny thing was....it only happened the Lexi I drove and filled up. I spent a lot of time and some money until one day when I had a thought.:roll eyes:

I was always trying to fill my cup to the rim. Hmmm, I wonder if I am overflowing gasoline into one to the EPA safety containers attached to my filler neck????

I quit topping off my tank on fill-ups. I only pumped gas until it clicked off first time. No rounding up to the next dollar. Gasoline smell went away in about a month. It has been gone for years. You can Paypal me whatever you feel this is worth to you.

When you top off the pump has an overflow as well and puts fuel back into the stations tank that you pay for. Topping off just cost you money and it is also bad for the environment. I stopped doing this years ago.

Only filled half way due to taking it to Lexus. They found gas around the canister. He said it was filled I questioned being it is a sealed canister, he corrected and said drips from it. They changed the gas hose and the engine light still comes on.. I was tbone a direct hit in the left rear tire and gas door,

Still dealing with the problem.

Do we have a pressurized fuel tank for these cars? I have the same smell issue in my 01 ls430 and it seems to get worse with empty tanks. I never hear the "whoosh" sound when I open the gas cap. I don't know if that's normal but I have a new gas cap from dealer and I'd expect a check engine light if gas is escaping through the cap.

I'd like to understand how our emission systems work w.r.t. gas tank. Does anyone here know?

So if it's worse suggests your fuel damper or sealing washers were the problem.

Did you install Lexus fuel damper and new compression washers??

How did you torque damper?
