Unhappy Replacement of Navigation

Does anyone know if it is possible to basically upgrade the navigation system with newer. I have 2002 model and to my understanding they did not do bluetooth until 2004. Is that navigation system (2004-2006) transferable to the 2002? What exactly needs to be replaced?

just replaced my gen 3 with a gen 4 from a 2006 rx400h. you should have no problem with the replacement. make sure you look for part number 86841-50090

I assume this was just the Nav ECU in the trunk and not the in-dash head? Was it a straight swap-out or were mods required? What functionality did you gain from the upgrade? From what I've read, the mediocre Lexus navigation really doesn't improve much, but that BT and rear cam functionality came when the Gen 4 was introduced. Being these are the two features I miss the most I'd love to know I can get there by taking this path.

Default 2001 LS430 and 86841-50090 nav unit

My 2001 LS430's original 86841-47020 (stock, gen 2) nav unit was dying and I found an 86841-50090 (gen 4) from a low-mileage Prius that was in great shape for a great price. Installation was a breeze. And nav is working again.

The map graphics look better to me and the nav functions work mostly as expected but there is at least one quirk: the "auto set" function for the digital clock above the dash seems to not work at all. I can set the clock to a very wrong time and it never seems to get corrected by the auto set function. On top of that, on its own the clock runs fast - with the old nav unit it was always spot on because the auto set function must have worked.

Does anyone know if the 86841-50090 unit supports the auto set feature? Is there a setup trick I need to know?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I am not looking to replace the unit in the trunk but I wanted to replace the head and display. Is it possible to swap out a 2002 ls430 with like a 2004-2006 ls430 or prius and have it function. I just want to upgrade to a system which offers BT and if I get the rear camera capability then so be it, Anyone Know???

Are you sure that it doesn't have bluetooth? On the left side of the steering column there's a button in our LS430 that resembles a bluetooth icon. It could be a voice command button, though. Can anybody clarify this for me?

there is a whole menu available through the nav screen for the bluetooth usage and options. you would know if you had it.

Dubsta, sorry.. I just now realized you replied and have a couple of questions;

- So I gather from your reply I'll pick up BT capability but not rear cam (I know I would need to install a camera, but was wondering whether the new ECU would provide an interface for it)

- As for BT, what have you used for a microphone so you can do hands free BT cell calls?

Also, is there any other benefits related to basic navigation - is the Gen 4 any better than the Gen 3?

Thanks.

no you will not get BT capability but there is a connection for BT but the 02(not mine at least) doesn't have an additional cable for BT hook up. the graphics are better but other than that there's no big difference.

I have a similar problem except I bought a 2000 Celsior from Japan.. Same as 2001 LS 430. Its all Japanese, do I need to switch out the head unit and the Computer in trunk to get English? Or does the ECU dictate the language and map set? Rather switch out the ECU as the head unit works awesome except I cant read Japanese, lol

Does anyone know if the 01-03 Nav display can be swapped for the 04-06 unit? Also is there any difference with the display itself like resolution or contrast ratio?

The plugs on the back of the unit in the dashboard are different, so no.

Also, since there seems to be some confusion in this thread, the Bluetooth is a function of the updated unit in the dashboard. Replacing the navigation computer in the trunk adds no functionality outside of the navigation function itself.

Well was more interested in the screen itself as I was hoping it was of better resolution vs the old unit. I have no need to update the entire unit as I have gone aftermarket and BT and every other feature I could want is in that unit. I just wanted a better screen to view video on as the stock unit is atrocious.
