HOW TO: LS430 Mark Levinson EVERYTHING w/Pics & part#s
#196
Just had the crappy ml amp go out on me. Comes on for a few seconds then cuts out. Thought is it was a blwon speaker . Replaced all the mids with 8ohm speakers and amo still cuts out.I know the amp has to stay put for things to work. Any way to use an aftermarket 5channel amp to power the system? seems like a better use of $ than paying 350 to repair the factory amp

I suspect my Mark Levinson Amp is dying. The sound quality is going down. Everything sounds high, like the sounds are all coming through tweeters even though all the speakers seem to be working. The rich sound is gone. What are the symptoms when the ML Amp is dying? What do these symptoms mean? My car is a 2003 LS430. The only change to the sound system is that I replaced the OEM Subwoofer with the recommended 8" Kicker ~5 years ago. Any recommendations are welcome.

I have been trying to troubleshoot a used ML amp that I got in a parts lot along with a bunch of other stuff. Some of the stuff worked like a charm: PFM, OEM tails, O2 sensors, etc. This one is from another year I believe, but I stripped all of my interior panels back and plugged it into my harness in place of my working ML unit and it powers up, but does not play sound. The part #s are different, but after some research, they should be interchangeable. Has anyone here run across that issue before?

Amazon and Ebay vendors sell these speakers at a premium. Asking a question to all if sticking with the OEM makes it plug and play and not make any alterations with wiring etc. and maybe make the extra price difference worth it. The other question/consideration is whether aftermarket/non-OEM speakers actually sound BETTER than OEM.
Thanks.
Thanks.

NAVTool
Adding a back up camera to your Mark Levinson Nav
Attachment 436851
NavTool is not exactly plug-and play device, you have to connect some other wires also
however it is a generic video converter box which you can take with you to your new car
the only thing you will need to get another car specific wiring harness
Attachment 436852
this is the camera that i have purchased from ebay for my installation
But you can use any camera that has the RCA video cable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxUttk2tSy8
This is what the entire kit looks like
I thought that there were way too many extra/unwanted wires on the tool
I soldered the 2 white wires to the (-) part of the power connector.
Cut off the green ebrake wire and capped it off
cut off and looped the red and black wire that went to the switch
You will need to remove most of the trunk interrior for a clean install
Pull out the light and unplug it
pop off the covers for the tail light that are in the corners
pop out the rest of the liner
Marked spots is what holds it up
pull it back to get those clips out
marks is where clips are
you will also need to remove trim from around the tool box
thats why i posted this shot ^ pop this peice out prior to trying to remove that
this is what the back of you nav looks like
see that medium sized white connector in the middle?
thats where the "Y" harness will plug in from Nav Tool
you can do it w/o removing the navigation
I just pulled it to take a better picture
I took out that plastic peice and drilled it for the camera
ran the power to the tail light harness
soldered it to the ground (-) and reverse (+)
power for Nav tool was taken from the fuse box on the left side of the trunk
using the volt meter found what is acc and which one was reverse light
then just connect the wires
and plug it back in
i found a nicely fitting spot for the nav tool and tied it down to it

Any reason why these would not be a good replacement for my non ML system? ]

HAs anyone replace the ML amp with another using all the oem wiring and possibly same amp location? My amp is taking a **** on me. One day all speakers sound blown the next day everything sounds perfect. Very frustrating.

This is not in regards to speakers but the actual display on my UL w/NAV. I received this from Phoenix Automotive. I am not sure if this will work but they say it will plug in to everything and be displayed on a new 13" screen. I am still working on it but thought I would share for those looking for a possible upgrade. New to the forum so forgive me if I posted this incorrectly. Here is there response to me?
We only have universal unit that can compatible with your car, and here is the link, we can provide the specific bezel and the cables instead of universal cables, but need to pay more $54,

Someone sent a PM to me about the ML sound system, so I thought I would post this reply. TarXan[/QUOTE]
Hey, just saw your message. I still have a high sounds issue. Sounds way better using the CD player but radio music is still a bit fuzzy and high pitched. One discovery was the foam edges of the door speakers had cracked due to age. So I bought a repair kit for those speakers. The kit came with new foam rings, pre-cut to replace the old rings around cones and glue for attaching the foam to the cones. So I took the speakers out, one by one, remove the old foam rings and glued in the new ones. Sounds much better but not as good as it once did. It is hard to find speaker matched to that Levinson Amp, which drove me to buy the rebuild kit and save some money. The repair kit is from Simply Speakers, www.SimplySpeakers.com.. The kit is called New_Edge-it. The speakers are really a JBL type of speaker. There is a DYI YouTube video on how to repair the speakers
