On the '04, if you have the original version 4.1 DVD, then this manual override will work, but if it was updated at any point to version 6.1 or greater, this manual override does NOT work anymore. This is sort of why I've been hesitant to upgrade, but in my 1+ years of owning my '04 now, I've not had to use the override much, so I'm thinking of getting the 9.1 when the price drops.
I'm pretty sure the 2006 was still Gen 4 DVD, but version 6.1 already, so the manual procedure described above would NOT work. I've also heard it's not backwards compatible, so if anyone upgrades from 4.1 to say 6.1 and loses the override, then going back to 4.1 would not restore it. Not sure if that's true or not as I have not tried this.
