Fuel mileage questions
I recently bought a 04 LS430 UL with 103k miles. I took a 500 mile trip this weekend and kept the speeds about 75mph -- I averaged 28.2 MPG on mainly straight roads and I was wondering;
1) is this normal or above average for this car?
2) the car is 5 years old with over 100k and still gets great highway mileage
whats all the commercials and hype about regular cars (4 and 6 cylinder) getting just over 30mpg hwy? I dont see the great accomplishment with that.

I got an 01 ls43 with 86k and I take it from ny to Pa every weekend and average about 26.8mpg highway even my rang tells me 490 till empty I hand v8's before but the ls gets the best mpg even better then my older bros gx470 As long as you maintain it and don't floor it they get good mpg
I've taken a few road trips where I run out of a tank full of gas before I reached my destination. I remembered I barely got over 400 miles before the fuel indicator light came on. Usually when I fill up, the range will be like around 350-390 miles
I guess it adapts from my previous datas.
You can't compare a sedan to an SUV.

The big thing going with the LS is the aerodynamics. I think the CoF is like .25 or something like that. That's pretty much race car league. The more you can slice through air smoothly, the less strain on the engine to compensate for the drag.
If you put on cruise set to 65-70, you can get 26mpg minimum on highway and some have noted 28+ mpg. That's pretty darn good for a 4.3L V8 when some 3.5L V6 can barely hit 26 mpg on paper, with real life probably around 22 mpg.
The LS is one of those rare vehicles where the EPA sticker is actually rating under the real world numbers.

Last summer I got 28.3 (Tank Average) hwy from ATL to St Simmons Island, 324 miles to get there. I had in between the half and 1/4 tank left, I could not beleive how good the MPG was for an V8!

i can consistently get 500+ miles per tank and i average about 23-24 in my normal driving habits which is prolly like 60-70% highway. what about your average speed, huh???
17 city is normal for this car and it seems 26-28 is average highway mileage depending on your speed. I am just surprised that a full size luxury vehicle gets just as good fuel mileage as many V6 cars on the highway , and it made me wonder why brands such as Chevy are happy promoting 4 cylinder vehicles that get 33 mpg Highway. Based off the Lexus - they should be getting 40+ easy. And the 22 gallon fuel tank is great.
Yeah, local stinks. When I do local only, 18-19mpg only at best. It's feast or famine for this vehicle. Low speed, the big size and weight drags it down. High speed, the excellent aerodynamics comes to the rescue. Darn, wish it was a hybrid like the Prius where under a certain speed (say 30 mph) the gas engine won't kick in.
I could drive to work with the engine off half the time.
