my 04 has always taken 3-4 seconds to turn. i'v always been bothered that it takes that long but iv never had a problem were it wouldn't actually start. makes no difference if its cold or i just drove it just always takes that long.

SIX SECONDS ?!?!?! Did you actually time it? I did a "watch test" and 6 seconds is A LOT of seconds to be cranking. Obviously, that is not normal and something is going cookoo.

So new battery already. Starter is cranking... alternator good? plugs? how about fuel? I don't think using 87 in itself would cause this, but maybe one bad batch of fuel with condensation in it? Have you refueled since?

okay maybe 5 seconds, still very long, and problem started recently... I always use 93 octane Exxon or Shell. do you think it's time to replace plugs already at 75k? it's strange, sometimes it starts up okay, most times really slow. wonder what it could be.

I have a little over 75K 2004. I have the sympton that it takes longer to crank when after the car has been started (warmed up) and I try to start it right after I shut it off or after a couple minutes.

My best bet is that it's the spark plugs, but I haven't checked them yet.

Three other possible causes for long cranking time:

- Fuel filter getting clogged
- Fuel pump going bad
- Fuel return valve going bad.

replaced the fuel pump (b/c dealer said it was fuel pump problem). Crank is still kinda slow, but sounds a little stronger and a bit faster.

I wonder is the 10% ethanol (E10) having an affect on our fuel pumps, and I hear there is talk of rasing it to 20%. I hate that it is E10 maybe it is me but it seems like the car performance is not where it should be when running E10 and who knows it might be more than 10% already.

Glad your problem is kinda solved.
